I utilize traditional talking, contemporary neuroscience, mindfulness and body-centered techniques.
Do you ever wonder, despite all your knowledge and efforts for growth that you still end up in a pattern of doing the same thing over and over again? Well, it's not your fault and there is a way to change it. When we are free to truly see and understand the connection to our brain, body, mind, and relationships, we can actually rewire our brains to build new neural pathways for new ways of thinking and being. Most of what we do, we have no idea why we do it; almost 85% is not on a conscious level.

I have specialized training and personal experience in EMDR (look into it, it's pretty fascinating!), grief work, and mindfulness/meditation support.
I love supporting teens, young adults, and adults as they work to accept themselves, trust their own intuition, and get "unstuck" from past experiences and big losses.

I will work to help you gain a better understanding of the roots of your emotions and behaviors and to increase your level of mindfulness of the moment-to-moment experience of your life.
I enjoy working with clients who feel that their minds have become unmanageable. This experience often arises from a belief that inner conflict and complexity is a problem to be solved rather than a state of affairs to be understood and befriended. Sometimes this unmanageability shows up as anxiety, where the mind dreads bad outcomes and wont allow you to enjoy your life. Other times as depression, where the mind is mired in hopelessness, despair, or resentment. Addictions of various sorts can also arise from this state of affairs, whereby we try to distract or quiet our minds through destructive patterns of behavior.

One strategy (called mindfulness) that I particularly encourage involves learning to become focused on the present moment, not judging ourselves so harshly, and treating ourselves and others with compassion.
Leadership Skills, Performance Enhancement and Life Coaching. I am confident in the ability of the individual to change. We all face many difficult challenges in life, but these can become opportunities for growth and personal development. Most of us have never really learned the optimal skills and strategies to deal with these challenges. After 30 years working with individuals from a great variety of economic, educational and cultural backgrounds, I have found that identifying and letting go of our old, unproductive coping strategies, and replacing them with new ways of engaging with the world, allows us to live in a more rewarding and productive fashion.

As a mental health provider who has been practicing in an integrated family medicine clinic, my approach to health is holistic. I believe the foundations of well being are built on sufficient sleep, good nutrition, physical activity and healthy relationship with oneself and others. So, whether we are struggling with anxiety, depression, concentration difficulties, relationship issues etc, when we improve how our brain functions, by strengthening our wise brain and quieting our survival brain (through mindfulness and other techniques), then we increase our ability to live the life that is meaningful to us.

My approach is based on respect and compassion, while drawing on tools of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, family systems, adolescent development and other evidence-based practices.
As an experienced adolescent therapist, I am passionate about helping teens and young adults figure out who they are, who they want to be, and the barriers keeping them from realizing these goals. I have assisted hundreds of adolescents through academic challenges, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, substance use, ADHD, traumatic experiences, social anxiety and divorce. We work together to develop healthy ways to manage our emotional life, identify strengths which can support self-confidence and motivation, and learn to trust we are worthy of the love and connection we want in our relationships.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
