As a clinical social worker I primarily practice mindfulness, CBT, and EMDR.
Maybe you've decided to step out of your comfort zone and have begun to look for a professional therapist. I want to commend you for taking that leap into the unknown, I know it's not easy. You may feel that you want to talk to someone other than a family member or friend. Someone impartial and skilled that could help you sort out your feelings or meet new goals. When you come meet with me we will work together to prioritize what is important to you. There will be no labels given to you in my office. Just genuine warmth and compassion. Call today and take the first step in healing.

I utilize an eclectic, evidence-based approach that includes CBT, DBT and mindfulness-based interventions that encourage growth while simultaneously honoring and accepting you for who you are.
Making the choice to go to therapy is not the easiest one you will ever make, but it is among the most powerful. Whether you are struggling to cope with recent changes in your life or have made the choice to address long-standing issues in a new way, finding someone who is able to provide an unbiased, thoughtful perspective can improve your life profoundly. All of us encounter obstacles and face difficulty. In response to that difficulty, we may develop coping strategies that no longer serve us.

I utilize what, in my experience, are the most effective treatment methods based on the cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and mindfulness schools of therapy.
As a psychotherapist and healer for many years it has been my privilege to offer and provide help and comfort to people in distress. Experience has taught me that we all struggle to recover from the pains of the past, deal with the challenges of the present and the insecurities of the future, in our efforts to live the best lives that we can. This often seems very difficult if not impossible to accomplish alone. A strong and nurturing therapeutic relationship is a powerful and stable foundation for dealing with these challenges to our well-being, especially in these very troubling and uncertain times.

My work is integrative, borrowing from family therapy, psycho-educational, psycho-dynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and Eastern philosophy mindfulness techniques.
Change is always possible. I work from a strengths-based perspective, and I believe that the work of psychotherapy is to help people access untapped resources toward health and vitality. Someone suffering from depression is just that-a person with depression, not a "depressed person"--depression needn't define you. When you walk into my office, we will explore the roadblocks in your life that keep you from moving forward, and make a plan for getting past them.

Drawing primarily from the cognitive-behavioral, psycho-dynamic, and mindfulness based schools of therapy, care is focused on the specific needs of the people I see.
Since you have come to this place I will assume that you are struggling with something very difficult for you and that you are searching for effective ways to ease or finally end the pain. Sometimes your suffering can be traced to emotional, physical or spiritual injury, trauma or loss that you experienced many years ago, or it may have been very recent. At this moment only you know how you are suffering, what it is doing to you and your loved ones and the price that you are paying. Dealing with it alone can be very challenging, frustrating and frightening. This does not have to continue. Support is available.

Pragmatic, short-term treatment which emphasizes personal responsibility and mindfulness constitutes the core of my therapeutic approach.
For over 25 years, I have provided forensic consultation to New York State and Federal courts on criminal, family, and civil matters. Also, I see patients on a regular basis for neuropsychological testing to evaluate the effects of brain trauma, learning disabilities, and ADD on everyday living. In addition, sex offender work-ups (which include computer-based testing and clinical polygraph) are offered through my practice (NY Forensic) for the purpose of risk assessment and dispositional recommendations for the court.

Life can be overwhelming on any given day, but when mental health concerns are added to the mix, it can seem impossible to overcome even small hiccups. I provide structured sessions using evidence-based approaches to help you or your family tackle concerns related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, trauma, grief, relationship stressors, infertility and adoption issues, sport performance, and life adjustments.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
