I graduated from a M.S. mental health counseling program at Eastern Washington University in 1995, got certified and ran a private practice in Seattle from 1995 through 2003. I worked in an outpatient community clinic, an inpatient psychiatric hospital, at retreat centers, and at a college counseling center until starting work on a PhD in Religious Studies and Psychology. I worked, studied, and lived in Europe, East Asia, and Africa before teaching 10 years at San Jose State University, so I am comfortable and confident working with very different sorts of people and I want everyone and anyone to feel welcome and at ease in my care.

Hello my name is Mattie Spires-Peppers and I am a graduate of J.F.K.U. I work with adolescents, adults, and families providing therapy using a variety of modalities but, work with most clients using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focus Therapy. I have worked with many clients that were experiencing trauma, grief, depression and bullying. As a therapist it is important to provide a safe environment where clients can speak freely without judgement. Clients can work through identify and understand patterns and behaviors in everyday life to promote growth and remove old behaviors causing stress and anxiety.

I specialize in anxiety, especially clients who have had past trauma. I work with both individuals and couples, especially if someone in the relationship has had past trauma. Some of the types of trauma I address in individual therapy are abandonment trauma, sexual trauma, racial trauma and physical abuse. Other challenges I support individuals with include perfectionism, overly responsible, avoidance, fight or flight responses relationship issues & grief. Emotional healing is key to recovering from your past. I support my clients to understand their emotions better and learn how to move through their emotions in a healthy way.

I am an Italian who has been living in The Bay Area for the last 40 years. I am fluent in English, Italian and Spanish. I have extensive experience and training in Hakomi, Somatic Based Psychotherapy and EMDR. I have more than 15 years of experience with Santa Clara County, Department of Families and Children Services, providing support and services to individuals, children and families who have been involved with the Child Welfare System. I also have 5 years of experience providing therapeutic services at a Medical Hospital Specialized in Treating HIV/AIDS patients who suffer from Addiction, PTSD and Trauma.
