As an an Iraq war veteran with 17 years of military experience I know the challenges that service members, their families, and trauma survivors face on a personal level. I am here to let you know that you will not just survive, but you will overcome your circumstances. I specialize in therapy with veterans, law enforcement, soldiers with PTSD, families, the severely mentally ill, the LGBT community, survivors of physical and sexual abuse, and victims of human trafficking. My goals when working with clients are to attack faulty thinking, improve coping skills, build resilience, and encourage adaptation to life challenges.

With more than 25 years of experience as a Clinician and Counselor, I possess an extensive track record of compassionate and change-oriented care across both the military and private sectors. Throughout my career, I have developed a varied counseling and advisory experience, serving a wide range of populations, including Soldiers, Veterans, first responders, adolescents, and parents.

My name is Richard Spires. I believe in the therapeutic alliance. Counseling is a team effort and we get the best results when we work together. Part of my counseling style is that I take time getting to know you and try to truly understand your issues. I have been to counseling myself and had experiences where I felt the therapist was not trying to understand my problems. I told myself that when I become a counselor, I never want any of my patients to feel like I didn't care. So I take pride in getting to know you and understanding your problems. So whenever you're ready to talk, I'm ready to listen.

Our office believes that access to counseling should be easy and comfortable. I personally try my best to never turn away a client, schedule immediately, and work with any financial barriers. Although I work with a variety of treatment goals and treatment modalities, I am known for my work with children, trauma experienced populations, relationship counseling, addictions, military and advocacy for community health. When working with children, I always involve the parents and I attempt to assess in a variety of settings to assure I have the entire picture. Counseling should feel comfortable and safe.
