Life is hard! Pause for a moment and give yourself credit for taking this brave, difficult step. You're respecting your struggles AND looking for constructive ways to address them. I use a collaborative and exploratory (rather than expert) model to help you develop/access resources to navigate life's difficulties. I use approaches supported by research while recognizing the limits of evidence-based therapies which often need to be adapted, abandoned, or incorporated with other practices to meet a person's realities, needs, and strengths. I strive to create a safe supportive relationship and deeply value feedback and dialogue.
With parents of different SES, race, and religious backgrounds, intersectionality is fundamental to my work. Acknowledging and embracing differences while not losing sight of our shared humanity is very important to me and our work. I strive for openness and a desire to learn while not placing the burden of teaching on you.
Areas of emphasis: Depression, anxiety, trauma, intergenerational trauma, racial/ethnic/gender identity, OCD, family of origin issues, attachment, narcissistic abuse, self-criticism/shame. I also set aside space in my practice for ADHD evaluations, immigration evaluations, and letters of support for gender affirming surgery/care.

Groups
Asian in America: A Mental Health Support Group
Dr. Handelman and Dr. Lawall are Multiracial Asian psychologists who co-facilitate this virtual group to create a supportive community-building space that includes information, discussions, and optional readings (e.g. Permission to Come Home by Dr. Jenny Wang). This group will explore and value both our shared and unique identities and experiences. This is intended to be a safe and inclusive environment - as Asians/Asian Americans we often struggle enough with belonging as it is! We welcome anyone with any other intersecting identities and cultivate a group culture based upon mutual respect for difference and diversity among us.
