The families and children of service members and veterans with PTSD are faced with troubling consequences. Among the problems combat veteran parents experience include, but are not limited to: refusal to seek treatment for fear of harming their careers, physical abuse, rising suicide rates, and limited resources for dealing with the complex issues of PTSD.
Children of combat veterans with PTSD have a higher risk of social, educational, and emotional damage. This phenomenon refers to the development of symptoms characteristic of PTSD, often caused by the extended exposure of a parent's symptomology. Some of the effects include: depression, aggression, anxiousness, and hyperactivity, and difficulty establishing positive peer relationships.
