Divine Union, Deification, or Theosis is a psycho-spiritual state involving the attainment of a perpetual and unceasing joy. This intense joy is resilient and unshakeable even in the face of the most severe of life’s difficulties. I regard this state as the true and proper definition of mental health. The attainment of true mental health thus requires that mental health professionals pay full attention both to clients’ psychological needs, and to their spiritual needs. Accordingly, I integrate secular psychotherapy with elements of traditional Christian spiritual direction to help clients move toward the goal of Union with God.
Many years of successful practice have also established that my approach can be readily adapted to non-Christian clients of all belief systems, with every sort of presenting mental health problem. The adaptation consists in collaboratively modifying the spiritual component of the therapy to accommodate the client’s pre-existing belief system.
The only requirement for therapeutic success on the part of the client is a basic sense of morality. A core client commitment to gratitude is also helpful, but not required. - My practice has its roots in the specialty of addictions to sex and electronic screens, and I still welcome clients with those presenting difficulties, but also work with all others.
