Have you ever felt like no matter what you do, it's never quite enough? Striving to please others while your own sense of self dims? It's a scenario all too recognizable for those who tirelessly chase perfection, habitually place others ahead of themselves, and wrestle silently with their own sense of self-worth. These patterns typically arise in response to your past experiences, serving as shields that helped you adapt and cope during your childhood years. Yet, there comes a point when you realize these patterns no longer harmonize with your present well-being as an adult. This is where my path intersects with yours.

I strive to be an effective and warm ally for adult and adolescent clients. By way of creating a therapeutic relationship rooted in compassion, housed within a healing environment, I believe it is possible to find meaningful changes in one's life. I work primarily from a systems-informed approach and utilize this framework to help understand behaviors not in isolation but as part of a system of factors where solutions require a deepening understanding of those factors.

Life can be hard. Especially when we feel disconnected from the people that we should feel the closest to. Sometimes difficult life circumstances stand in the way of us experiencing better connection. Sometimes it can feel like being stuck in a cycle that just continues to pull us back in no matter how hard we try to break free. Sometimes we are in the cycle so long that it feels helpless and hopeless.

I specialize in working with individuals and couples from a holistic perspective, incorporating evidence-based modalities to support healing and growth. My practice is informed by the belief that healing occurs within the context of relationships. I approach therapy from a "person in the environment perspective". I help clients explore the dynamics within their families of origin and how these patterns continue to influence their current relationships and sense of self. We will also explore the importance of secure attachments in fostering emotional regulation and resilience.

My work focuses on helping people struggling with addiction and/or symptoms resulting from childhood relational trauma Over 25 years of experience, I have seen that childhood experiences of neglect or emotional, physical and sexual abuse can cause serious psychological problems. 'Less than nurturing' parenting can cause adulthood anxiety, depression and addiction. Many of my clients have struggled with addictive behaviors using substances (alcohol, drugs) or processes (sex, love, work) to deal with emotional pain. There is a high correlation between painful childhood experiences and addictive behaviors.

Welcome! I specialize in all things related to relationships (dating, marriage, friends, roommates, parenting), anxiety, and self-esteem. Many of us were never taught how to deal with difficult experiences and emotions that arise over the course of our lives, or how to "be" in relationships (with ourselves or others). I see my role as one of walking alongside you, coaching you, teaching skills, providing resources & research, helping you process experiences, and aiding you in figuring out what direction you need to take. I ultimately aim to help you find your own inner strength and develop a personal power and sense of resiliency.

As a nonbinary trans guy and gender affirmative therapist, I know how scary it is to interact with providers who are poorly informed about issues facing the trans and nonbinary community. Having a clinician who is informed and affirmative can make a huge difference. I specialize in helping individuals navigate their gender journey and provide support to the LGBTQIA+ community. Since we are more than our gender or sexuality, I also work with a variety of other issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, general life transitions, self esteem, assertiveness and boundary setting, to name a few.

There are those days when just getting out of bed is difficult. Having someone help manage struggles and figuring life out is important. The twist and turns of life can leave one feeling drained, exhausted, and in a mental fog, or a loss of wanting to or even knowing how to move forward. This is where I come in, helping those who are stuck, lost, hopeless and who cannot figure out what’s going on inside, feeling there is no way out, or even making unhelpful choices in life. Possibly a teenager or young adult scared about life or the future and managing stress. This is why I am here.

My goal with all clients is to ensure that they feel heard and understood. Venturing into a world of reflection and growth can be challenging, but it does not have to be done alone. My goal as your therapist is to help you get closer to the feeling of comfort throughout our visits, and even better afterwards. Many of us seek empowerment, validation, and reassurance- I aim to provide that, and more, in a space that feels safe, and one in which you can overcome any hurdles you may be facing.

Every crisis is an opportunity for growth and development. It is by taking risks and surmounting challenges through which real and lasting transformation can occur. Although one of my therapist roles is to provide support, I also challenge my clients to think, feel, and behave differently. As a therapist, I prioritize developing and maintaining an open, nonjudgmental, and trusting relationship with my clients. I strive to be authentic and encourage the same of my clients. I help clients identify and meet their therapeutic goals through the development of insight and new skills.

I believe the best counseling is done in a safe, confidential and collaborative environment. It can be difficult to reach out, so it is important to find a counselor with whom you feel comfortable.

SORRY, I'M NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. Here's a nickel's worth of free advice: These listings are a good place to start (kudos for seeking support - there is not a single one of us who doesn't need it), but there is no paragraph so eloquent that it can substitute for sitting down with someone and finding out who they are and how it feels to talk with them. Meet with as many people as is necessary to find someone you truly trust. Don't settle. There are lots of therapists - yours should be awesome.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Austin?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
