Welcome to a safe space for black women , indigenous women , women of color and our allies. It is important to recognize that cultural factors can impact how conditions are experienced and treated. For example, research has shown that individuals from BIPOC racial and ethnic backgrounds may be less likely to seek mental health treatment due to cultural stigma, lack of access to care, or mistrust of healthcare providers. As a black doctor with cultural understanding, I am uniquely positioned to address these barriers and provide culturally sensitive care for women with ADHD, Anxiety, Obesity and Professional Burnout.

You're the woman who seems to have it all together on the outside- you’re successful, hardworking, and dependable, but on the inside you feel differently. You're your own worst critic and relentlessly beat yourself up for making mistakes. Your perfectionism is self-destructive, but you can't seem to stop. You feel unworthy of love, and your relationships are suffering. You say "yes" to everyone around you and feel resentful, ashamed, and guilty. You feel like you’re floating through life rather than being present and grounded. You're desperate to get to the root of your issues because it's exhausting and frustrating living this way.

I enjoy working with individuals of different ages, ethnicity, in need of individual, couples or family sessions. I believe that life is a journey, which at times, can be very challenging. Sometimes we find ourselves at a crossroads, trying to decide our direction. Staying on familiar paths can be easier yet repetitive and stagnant. Growth means change and following new paths, though unfamiliar and with unseen risks. Therapy can help one believe in themselves and try new paths, with the therapist lighting the way.

Being a parent, whether you are at the stage of trying to conceive or amid parenting chaos, can be both overwhelming and joyful. We face so much pressure as parents today and it can be really challenging to navigate. It can lead to feelings of worthlessness, sadness, increased fatigue, low motivation, overthinking, and difficulty sleeping. These challenges can also negatively impact partnerships, making two partners feel isolated and alone while in a relationship.

Altering the way we think and our daily behaviors can be an overwhelming decision to make. However, being able to achieve a healthy life balance and stability can provide us with a growth potential beyond our expectations. Therapy helps us explore ways to express ourselves more efficiently as well as to acquire coping skills to aid in alleviating ongoing personal struggles. I feel it is vital to create a comfortable, open environment in allowing my clients to convey vulnerable emotions. I achieve this through recognizing an individual’s unique needs while working collaboratively with each person.

Do you ever feel like it’s Groundhog Day? Every day seems exactly like the one before. You wake up, work, eat, sleep - lather, rinse, repeat. We’re all a little different than we were pre-pandemic. Perhaps you’re taking care of aging parents, your kids, trying to keep your marriage together. But what about you? Who takes care of you? You thought working from home would be great, but now you feel isolated and alone. You have people you can talk to, but you don’t want to feel like you’re “complaining”. You just want to stop feeling as though you’re on autopilot. You’re just… so… tired. You know what? I feel exhausted sometimes, too.

The most important part of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and client. I am compassionate and understanding. I give feedback where it is appropriate and even use a little humor. My goal is to help you feel comfortable enough to work on the real issues. My approach to therapy is practical and based on changing the negative thinking patterns that keep the client from making positive changes in his/her life. I am flexible and creative in treatment.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
