I have been successfully practicing individual, family , and marital therapy for over 30 years. My focus in the treatment process fundamentally proceeds from a client centered approach; In other words, I don't try to fit the client to some rigid framework but begin the work where the client is. I put great care into creating a safe, private, and confidential environment in which individuals, couples, and families can explore and deal with the issues that bring them into therapy.

Seeking connection is an integral part of being a human being. Often times our primary relationships with family members do not provide the connection that helps us feel the love and peace that we deserve. Through the therapeutic process, we can learn about how to seek relationships and connections that can bring this happiness to our lives. Sometimes this may mean creating boundaries with family members or friends or possibly ending those relationships we deem unhealthy. Through counseling, we are able to restore ourselves and our "families." This may mean our families of origin or simply the friends that we have chosen as our family .

By observing how individuals’ home and school environments influenced their behaviors, I found a unique fascination and understanding in how systems influence an individual and family .
I have a professional interest and passion to counsel adolescents, adults, families, and couples using evidence-based approaches and interpersonal practices. With supporting individuals overcoming trauma, mental illness, and/or substance abuse, I've learned how to aid in promoting an individual's personal sense of resilience through mindfulness techniques, along with other interventions, eliminating barriers to treatment.

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS), to understand how experiences alter personalities/world view, and to adjust, balance, and unify internal systems so you can live as your truest self.
Welcome! I am currently accepting new clients for individual, goal-oriented psychotherapy. I believe that beneath your suffering is an internal system that needs nurturing, updating, unification, and guidance. Regardless of the mental health diagnosis (or even in the absence of one), my overall approach is similar. We will look at your different internal perspectives and assist each one in the unique way it needs. Using ACT and IFS, together we can heal and unburden you, freeing you to live a value-based and balanced life.

My professional life has been consistently focused on serving people in need. After obtaining my bachelors degree from Michigan State University, I initially worked in the Governor's office in Lansing. I then decided to exercise my entrepreneurial spirit and transitioned into helping guide economically challenged families to find better housing solutions by developing low cost single family homes and developing large tracts of vacant and abandoned land. This work of helping families led me to desire doing work even more impactful, which led to my returning to school and obtaining my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
