Being a parent, whether you are at the stage of trying to conceive or amid parenting chaos, can be both overwhelming and joyful. We face so much pressure as parents today and it can be really challenging to navigate. It can lead to feelings of worthlessness, sadness, increased fatigue, low motivation, overthinking, and difficulty sleeping. These challenges can also negatively impact partnerships, making two partners feel isolated and alone while in a relationship .

I have a professional interest and passion to counsel adolescents, adults, families, and couples using evidence-based approaches and interpersonal practices. With supporting individuals overcoming trauma, mental illness, and/or substance abuse, I've learned how to aid in promoting an individual's personal sense of resilience through mindfulness techniques, along with other interventions, eliminating barriers to treatment.

I specialize in work with those impacted by depression, trauma, substance abuse, suicide, anxiety, sexual assault, sexual abuse, life-transitions, and interpersonal relationship challenges.
I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Reaching out for support often comes during a time of crisis or after living for many years with the weight emotional pain. Bringing people from crisis to hope is the forefront of my practice. The lack of access to quality mental health care for persons of color is real, and mental health needs are at times unmet. My cultural competence through life experience has allowed me to work well with individuals of diverse backgrounds.

The most important part of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and client. I am compassionate and understanding. I give feedback where it is appropriate and even use a little humor. My goal is to help you feel comfortable enough to work on the real issues. My approach to therapy is practical and based on changing the negative thinking patterns that keep the client from making positive changes in his/her life. I am flexible and creative in treatment.

My clientele includes individuals and couples ranging from adolescents to adults.
In my work, I know that not every theoretical approach is suitable, but depends instead on the needs and the individual psychology of the client. Thus, I work collaboratively with you based on your unique needs and desires in order to find the best way to help you. My approach is caring, empathic, supportive, and non-judgmental. I will respect and honor your beliefs and values, while seeking to challenge negative assumptions of self, identify destructive behavior patterns, and encourage positive life choices.

All aspects of you are welcome, and it is my hope that we will create a relationship in which you find comfort and safety to be yourself.
I work with adults experiencing depression, anxiety, conflicts in relationships, and uncertainty in overcoming life’s many challenges. I place equal emphasis on developing a warm, trusting therapeutic relationship and on the practice of intense listening. This allows us to discover and explore aspects of your self that have been hidden away as a means of coping with distress. At present I am able to bill for Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) or work with you to establish a fee based on a sliding scale.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
