Aside from my educational experience, I have +15 years of professional experience with children, adolescence, and adults in areas of depression, anxiety, grief and loss,
suicide
awareness and prevention, disabilities and daily living skills, art/play therapy, and ASD.
As a mental health professional, I believe in creating a safe and genuine environment for a client to be free to acknowledge their most vulnerable self, without judgment. The client-counselor relationship is unique and collaborative, therefore the significance of a trusting bond cannot be overemphasized. I believe that the therapeutic relationship grows organically, with time, and at the client’s pace. Each client is unique, so I integrate approaches best suited to the individual and the situation–Psychodynamic, CBT, Humanistic, and Mindfulness–but at the core of therapy is self-exploration.

I and my colleagues at the Institute for Hope and Human Flourishing understand that living with trauma, depression or anxiety, or having thoughts of
suicide
, means that a person is in a lot of pain and it's hard to see through the pain to find solutions that might help.
Sometimes life is so painful that even remembering reasons to stay alive can be very difficult. Life situations, such as grief or traumatic events, can cause day to day functioning to feel insurmountable. Finding coping skills and solutions happens when you have the freedom to talk about anxiety, grief, depression, trauma and
suicide
with the help of a skilled clinician who is comfortable working with it all -- and who understands, when working with youth, the importance of coaching parents so that they feel prepared to help their child through an emotionally difficult time.

My specialties include self-harm and
suicidal
behavior, behavior change, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, and couples and family therapy.
As a licensed psychotherapist, I have experience working with a variety of issues. I believe that change happens when an individual experiences the therapeutic relationship as safe and nonjudgmental. This allows individuals to develop a voice and be heard. I support my clients in accessing their innate motivation to change while assisting them in re-evaluating patterns of thought and behavior that inhibit personal growth. I have been trained in therapeutic practices that are shown to be effective in helping clients to reach their personal goals.

The decision to begin seeking therapy can be a challenging one. It's not always easy, the idea of opening yourself up to a new person in such a vulnerable way, so kudo's for even being on this website right now. I encourage all potential clients to reach out to have that initial conversation. Finding the right therapist can be a bit of a process and the only way to start figuring out if someone might be a good fit is to have a chat. And if it's not, that's totally okay, let's find you someone who is. Everyone deserves to have the best support possible.

Nothing feels more powerless than watching your teen shut down from trauma, social isolation and bullying, and use self-harm or aggression as a relief from pain. Young people don't always know how to express what they're feeling with words. Often their behaviors tell the story of how they feel. When those behaviors are stemming from inner conflict and pain, it's not just acting out - it's cry for help. We need to identify the root cause... and help them get on the right track so they start using their feelings as a guide, and navigating their emotional system toward self-love, self-worth and true confidence from the inside out.

“Life is hard…but does it have to be this hard?” No, it doesn’t.
Many people are worried, stressed, unhappy, or not coping with life’s ups and downs. Psychotherapy is a way to help you live your life, cope well, learn from current or long-term challenges, and even thrive in the midst of them. I would like to help you understand your current circumstances and collaborate with you to get you to where you want to be.

Do you struggle everyday to just get through the things you have to do? Have you often woken up and thought 'there has to be more to life than this'? Do you feel overwhelmed easily by things that don't seem to upset other people? Have you struggled with self-harming, over spending, or using something else to numb out the pain that just won't seem to go away? These questions are ones that so many people suffer through on a daily basis. The decision to come to therapy can be scary and so brave at the same time.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
