I offer insight-oriented psychotherapy to
women
struggling to navigate through complicated, painful, developmental life transitions such as pregnancy, the postpartum period, new marriage, divorce, child rearing, empty-nesting, menopause, etc. Under these conditions of exceptional stress, past experiences and feelings often automatically, strongly influence current emotions and decisions. Sometimes these coping strategies work well, but sometimes they may actually be counter-productive. Having self-awareness of connections between past and present from therapy can helpful in making healthier, more adaptive choices. In this way, it can actually turn some of the hardest times in life into opportunities for growth.

You're the
woman
who seems to have it all together on the outside- you’re successful, hardworking, and dependable, but on the inside you feel differently. You're your own worst critic and relentlessly beat yourself up for making mistakes. Your perfectionism is self-destructive, but you can't seem to stop. You feel unworthy of love, and your relationships are suffering. You say "yes" to everyone around you and feel resentful, ashamed, and guilty. You feel like you’re floating through life rather than being present and grounded. You're desperate to get to the root of your issues because it's exhausting and frustrating living this way.

It can be challenging to address your mental health concerns alone. As your counselor, I woud be honored to work together with you, or your child/teen, in a collaborative effort to discover new ways to cope with stressors and improve the quality of life. I utilize creative strength and interest based interventions to ensure an affirming and welcoming environment for clients from ages 4 and up- both neurodiverse and neurotypical. My counseling style is non-judgemental and is flexible to better respond to individual client needs. I also offer Supervision for Michigan LLC clinicians who are seeking full licensure.

Life is full of obstacles, and frustration, yet the very things that can bring us the most hurt, can also be the most fruitful soil for growth. No matter where we are in our life's journey there will be transitions and thresholds that create discomfort, and no one should have to endure this alone. I enjoy helping adolescents to older adults and couples living with anxiety, depression, or AHDH, or experiencing challenges - like the loss of a job, to regain a sense of agency, and connection, in order to move through difficulties, create meaning and make the most out of every day.

There is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty during these times. Voicing your stress and receiving support and validation in return can relieve some of that weight off your shoulders. Finding healthy ways to cope and allowing the time to focus on your needs are what we can do together to bring more stability into your life. As a counselor and art therapist, you will find yourself in an environment that centers on your self-growth and empowerment through talk therapy and creative expression. Neurodivergence, the recognition of more brain functioning than the neurotypical standard, is also a core practice you'll find with me.

Often times I find that the reoccurring themes in life are the challenges that require the greatest attention. Waking up from unconscious living is hard enough - doing that alone is even more cause to want to go back to sleep. Come in, I'd welcome the opportunity to work with you. Trying on a new perspective might be the way to seeing the possibilities you have! Half of the journey is making the call for help - the other half is working through the filters created from past experiences.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
