Nothing feels more powerless than watching your
teen
shut down from trauma, social isolation and bullying, and use self-harm or aggression as a relief from pain. Young people don't always know how to express what they're feeling with words. Often their behaviors tell the story of how they feel. When those behaviors are stemming from inner conflict and pain, it's not just acting out - it's cry for help. We need to identify the root cause... and help them get on the right track so they start using their feelings as a guide, and navigating their emotional system toward self-love, self-worth and true confidence from the inside out.

Hope, healing, wholeness. This is what we all want. But instead we sometimes feel despair, broken, and alone. We long to feel loved and understood. But often that doesn't happen. Something has gone wrong. Life is not what we had hoped. We are not who we want to be. Are you troubled by guilt, destructive behavior, discouragement or depression? Or perhaps it's marital problems, being a single adult, or
adolescent
issues. Maybe you struggle with a constant feeling of failure, the pain of sexual abuse, or the memory of bullying. There is help-and hope.

I have experience in providing substance abuse counseling to
adolescent
and adult populations.
I have faith in the idea that people can, and do change. In my experience, change is not always a linear process. Often, when trying to change a situation or behavior, people fall short or stumble. Being able to truly evaluate an individual's strengths and building upon those, allows for the needed empowerment to overcome our barriers. I am passionate about helping individuals to overcome various behavioral health concerns. Whether you are facing addiction, anxiety, anger issues, grief, stress, depression or trauma, I use a strengths based approach, coupled with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to build upon your inherit resiliency to affect change.

My ideal client is anyone who is willing to take a chance on themself and be curious. My ideal client is willing to explore their past, present, or future, identify their needs, learn coping skills, understand the parameters of their weaknesses and build on their strengths, celebrate their progress, and bring peace (or acceptance) to their chaos. My ideal client is open to letting me in on who they are and their journey so that we can work together toward growth, progress, and sustainability.

"Mental health isn't a thing. Talking about feelings and experiences isn't going to help. Things will get better by just putting my head down and powering through. I'm strong, self-reliant, and I don't need any help. I'll be fine just the way I am." These are all valid thoughts and feelings for an individual to have and many people believe these statements are true. Stereotypically, men especially, fall into these thought patterns. The numbers reflect this, approximately 30% vs 70% of those seeking counseling are men vs women. We are taught men don't have feelings and if they do they sure as hell don't talk to anybody about them.

Do you struggle everyday to just get through the things you have to do? Have you often woken up and thought 'there has to be more to life than this'? Do you feel overwhelmed easily by things that don't seem to upset other people? Have you struggled with self-harming, over spending, or using something else to numb out the pain that just won't seem to go away? These questions are ones that so many people suffer through on a daily basis. The decision to come to therapy can be scary and so brave at the same time.

I became a therapist because I believe people can do hard things, especially with the right support alongside them. I work with children, teens, and young adults who deserve for someone to meet them where they are at, and empower them to make positive change. I also believe therapy for children and teens is best done with the whole child and whole family in mind, and can provide family sessions as needed.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
