I’d be glad to talk with you for a few minutes on the phone as a courtesy - to discuss what you’re looking for and if I can help. We can meet once or twice (or more) to explore your areas of struggle, as well as the positive things about your life (you’re more than just your problems). We’d also take some time to clarify what you’re hoping to achieve, and if I can assist - given my background, expertise, and manner. Per the research, a good fit is so important for a successful psychotherapy or counseling outcome. If we agree to work together, we'd typically arrange weekly sessions for a period of time.

As a social worker with a passion for helping teens and young adults, I provide a compassionate and supportive environment where individuals can explore their experiences with depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Viewing each person through a biopsychosocial lens, I understand that emotional and mental health challenges are shaped by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. I work collaboratively with clients to uncover these underlying influences, providing individualized care that addresses their unique needs.

My experience includes working as a Registered Behavior Technician with autistic children, teaching English in Ecuador, and providing therapy services for autistic youth and adults with compassionate culturally responsive care.
Charity begins at home,” my mother would always say. “Outside, the world is hard enough but at home, you should have peace.” That belief guides my work with children and families today. I believe healing begins in spaces where children feel safe, seen, and supported and that this sense of home can be built through relationships, play, patience, and care. As adults, it is our responsibility to create environments where children are free to grow, learn, and express themselves without fear.

Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected. They may be carrying stress, anxiety, or sadness that makes daily life feel heavier than it should. Some are navigating changes in relationships, careers, or identity, while others are working through past experiences that continue to impact them. What they want most is to feel understood and supported in a safe, non-judgmental space. They seek clarity, healthier ways of coping, and stronger connections with themselves and with others. Above all, they hope to move forward with greater peace, confidence, and hope for the future.

My clients are often looking for a therapist who understands that we are more complex than just our minds. I believe our bodies, our environments, our identities, and our histories are also critical parts in our healing.

I don't believe in having an "ideal client," but rather subscribe to Irvin Yalom's idea that the client/clinician relationship is one of "fellow travelers." Therefore, I view it as my responsibility to meet the client where they are in order to begin a journey in which their needs and strengths indicate the direction of therapy. I create a space in which my diverse client-base is inspired to be as truthful and expressive as possible and in which we can begin to pay attention to the client's deepest voice. Moving toward feeling and through repression is crucial to my work, and I believe lasting growth begins here.

Hello, I am Mary Thomason, a counseling intern with a specialization in art therapy from Pennsylvania Western University. I take a holistic approach to counseling, honoring each unique person's journey by working from a number of perspectives. I believe the space between us is sacred, and that it is a safe container and a relationship of witness that allows for deep healing to take place. I have a passion for community work and women's groups that provide space for deep healing and witness. By healing as a community we heal the burden of individualism and step into the truth of healing as a collective and relational practice.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
