Sexual Abuse Therapists in Saline, MI

individual therapy--marriage/couples therapy --- professors, college and graduate students --- sexual abuse --- gay/lesbian/queer community -- family of origin issues -- mood problems--personality patterns/dysfunctions
It's hard being a person. We all struggle to some extent in fundamental areas of human life-- relationships, identity, work, destructive behaviors, the meaning of life itself. Satisfying marriage/committed relationships are a specific challenge faced by many. I work in both individual and couples therapy. There are many ways to approach human problems, including: how family of origin influences personality; one's relationship to one's thoughts and feelings; self-defeating beliefs, both conscious and unconscious; self-defeating behavior. I value thoughtfulness and compassion, working together, and recognizing your goals and ideas.

It is written, "Hope is an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." A popular image of an anchor symbolizes safety and stability. Many people - maybe even you - face terrible storms in their lives: addiction, abuse, fear, loss of relationships, joblessness, loneliness and more. In response to life's storms, people turn to compulsive sexual behavior, anger, substance abuse and food to soothe themselves. These "medications" not only do not work, but create chaos in our lives. Other ways of dealing with turmoil include lying, isolation and feelings of shame, guilt and worthlessness. I offer a refuge to chart a new course.

You have a fundamental right to feel happy, loved, and connected. There are many things that get in the way of that, including struggles like anxiety and depression. This can be caused by past trauma or other negative experiences, as well as genetics or circumstance. You might find that you’re your own worst critic, finding ways to judge or put yourself down. In truth, we’re all doing the best we can and we deserve support to heal, grow, and accept all the parts of ourselves. In addition to treating anxiety and depression, I provide support for conditions such as PTSD, ADHD, and OCD, among others.

An important aspect of any therapeutic relationship is the rapport and ease you have in discussing your issues and concerns with your therapist.
I believe the right fit between the client and therapist is in large part a function of the flexibility in approach and ways of intervening with you as an individual client.
I see the therapeutic relationship as being a collaborative partnership that is outcome focused in addressing your issues and concerns.
The emphasis is on doing what is most effective in moving you toward your desired outcomes in the least amount of time possible.

Hi there :) I understand that it can be difficult to share thoughts and feelings. There are times when we want to share how we feel, but the words just do not come together the way we want them to. Perhaps it is the way you feel hopeless about the future, passive in your own life, paralyzed when thinking about how to move forward, dispensable, unimportant, not good enough, alone despite being in a room full of people, or invisible in a world that does not see you. I often work with combinations of trauma, self-esteem, identity confusion, and grief. If any of this resonates with you, I want to support you!

"I saw the angel in the marble and chisled until I set him free." (Michelangelo). I see psychotherapy as being like this-most people have it within them to know what they need or want, but something has kept them from feeling free to live life to the fullest. Most people come to see me when they are feeling that important parts of their lives (love, work or play) feel disappointing or "stuck." The "chisling" in therapy is you and I together discovering what is holding you back and identifying so many more choices than it may feel that you have now.

I focus on the treatment of trauma using a mind-body and mindfulness framework and work from the understanding that our life experiences are stored in the body. It’s important to pay attention not only to our thoughts and emotions, but also to the clues our body gives us. My goal is to help clients create their own sense of safety, enhance relationship to self, and to move towards a space of presence and increased well-being. I also offer consultation to clinicians hoping to deepen their understanding of parts work using a trauma-informed perspective.

Have you ever been told you were in a "safe space" only for it to not actually feel that safe? Have you been struggling with a sense of invalidation in your life? Do you feel like you need to learn some new skills to get "unstuck?" Do you like to learn about psychological processes that make you who you are?
Rather than telling you I'm a "safe space," I commit to showing you through our work together that you are seen, heard, and (most importantly) validated! As you'll hear me say many times: "Emotions are valid; what we choose to do with them is where our therapeutic skills come in!"

Life can be hard. Young people face a number of challenges-- family stresses, anxiety about growing older and separating from parents, peer pressure, the lure of substances. As adults, we also face painful stressors-- divorce, for example, losses, aging. We can become stuck, overwhelmed, and confused.
In my work with adolescents and adults, I offer an engaged, intensive approach that will allow us to understand how longstanding dysfunctional patterns and beliefs affect your daily life. Specialized training and decades of experience have taught me that the better we understand ourselves, the better we can handle challenges and implement adaptive solutions.

Psychotherapy, if done well, provides participants with the gift of self-understanding. That self understanding, I have found, comes from the experience of being listened to and understood by a sensitive and knowledgeable therapist. But in addition, psychotherapy needs to practically address problems. I have extensive training in contemporary psychoanalytic approaches, which allows me to help patients understand themselves more deeply; often this produces profound changes. But when problems require practical techniques, I integrate aspects of cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and humanistic approaches.

The decision to start therapy signals an interest and curiosity about becoming more grounded and present in our lives. Each of us has a unique set of strengths and challenges that shape who we are and how we experience relationships. My therapeutic approach is trauma-informed and draws on psychodynamic, sensorimotor, and mindfulness based modalities. I work with clients from a practical, here-and-now perspective while attending to the impact of relational, cultural, and early childhood experiences. I am Level 1 Basic Trained in Somatic and Attachment Focused EMDR. I also work with grief & loss, depression, and body image/acceptance.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
