Oh the healing power of therapy! I feel passionate that everyone has a unique life story, and that some of life's chapters deserve a closer look to bring about improved coping, healing, and positive change. My approach is eclectic and trauma informed. I draw upon reality theory and the study of behaviors and neurocognitive development. I use CBT, mindfulness, and other practices as appropriate. The goals of therapy and the techniques used are based on each client's individual needs. I am proud to be working with community agencies, corrections and families for over 15 years.

Not accepting new clients: I gravitate to "working outside the box" with individuals, groups, couples, and families whose lives have been negatively impacted by trauma. I have focused on women and men who were physically, emotionally or sexually abused as children or individuals traumatized as adults. Treating veterans and/or active duty military personnel who have served in war zones is of special interest to me. I have seen first hand the difficulty so many of them have reintegrating into their families and into civilian life. I find a tremendous amount of fulfillment and joy walking with them on their journey back into life.

Harvard Avenue Counseling Services mission is to provide high end virtual counseling services. Online counseling should not be a manufactured service provided by a corporation that sees clients and counselors as numbers to provide profits to shareholders. Harvard Avenue Counseling Services is a small scale high end counseling practice. Our clients and counselors are our main focus and not just a number. I decided to open Harvard Avenue Counseling Services because I saw a huge need for a high quality virtual counseling service that was able to provide personalized care.

Trying to save a relationship before it's too late? Is your
teenager
struggling with depression, anxiety, or making healthy decisions? Want a counselor who helps you decide what to do next instead of telling you what you're doing wrong? Maybe you're just tired of your current situation but not quite sure what to do to change it? I don't dwell on your past so I can explain how your parents screwed you up. I help you develop a clear idea of what changes you want and how to make those changes happen. Think coaching, not counseling.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
