I have a semi-structured program that I use with chronic pain patients, addressing cognitive and behavioral aspects of pain management and employing specific techniques such as relaxation procedures and hypnosis.
I see a primary goal of psychotherapy as providing the individual with a sense of empowerment: the belief that you are able to control your own thoughts and actions and through that interact more effectively in social, personal, and occupational arenas. Therapy begins with establing a supportive therapeutic relationship, in which one feels accepted and validated. The specific methods I use vary depending on the nature of the problem and the needs of the client.

These trainings cover depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, addiction, anger, pain, and personality disorders.
I work with clients experiencing a wide range of challenges. Some clients come to me because they have a painful past filled with grief, guilt, or trauma. Some of my clients have challenging current circumstances, like troubled relationships, unfulfilling careers, and addiction to substances and behaviors. Some of my clients come to me because they are bogged down by sticky emotions like depression, anxiety, and anger. Some days I am helping clients speak or compete in front of thousands of people, other days I am helping clients get out of bed to start the day.

The pain from these wounds can show up in our lives in many different ways such as self-sabotage, inability to trust yourself or others, difficulty making decisions, and fear of vulnerability and connection with others.
As a therapist over the last 5 years, I have learned that connection, safety, and trust are the most important ingredients that can determine positive outcomes for trauma treatment. I have experience with neurodivergent individuals with a wide array of trauma wounds. These wounds create a powerful story about why these distressing events happened to us. When these wounds are left unattended, or avoided, over time, we may develop very complex chapters of this story. This can make it very hard to separate who we really are from the distorted perception trauma creates. These events can cause us to disconnect and lose ourselves.

You are so tired of feeling anxious, stressed, and discouraged all the time. Your life looks good from the outside, but deep down you are struggling with all the worries and stress of your life, and your thoughts are out of control. Most of all, you’re ready to feel happy and positive again! I want to help you get there.

I have been a therapist for over 15 years. Before opening my own practice, I had the opportunity to work as a supervisor at a busy mental health and substance treatment facility. Wanting to focus on the clients and get back to what I love about providing treatment, I decided to pursue private practice. I specialize in working with anxiety, trauma issues, grief issues, and relationship problems.

Life is about balance and balance is not something you find, but something you create. I utilize a variety of different therapy techniques to help individuals, couples, or families improve and grow in their mental health by exploring the imbalance in their life and by focusing on how they can feel better through change. My role as a therapist is NOT to solve problems for people but to help guide them on their journey to find resolution for themselves.

Perhaps you have a new diagnosis of ADHD or Autism, and want to know what it means for your future. Perhaps you suspect you are neurodivergent, but aren’t sure how to proceed. Perhaps you want to show up more authentically; you want to learn to stop masking your autism, for example, or present as the gender you align with, but want support and guidance through the conflicts that could arise. Perhaps you just want to stop feeling like your own worst enemy.

To me, spirit is about what is inside you regardless of your circumstances. My goal for providing therapy is teaching people how to function within how their lives actually are; good or bad, struggle or peace, history of trauma or not. Faith is a crucial part of it. In Acts 27 Paul is on a boat being tossed by a terrible storm. He tells the crew we should not have sailed BUT NOW we can manage the storm. In the Buddhist Eight Fold path Right Judgment is make choices based on how things truly are and not driven by emotion. The storm teaches us things and makes us stronger.

I earned my Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2011 and have extensive experience treating individuals with chronic health conditions, infertility and perinatal loss, perinatal mood disorders, pelvic pain, depression, anxiety, conflict in relationships, life and career transitions, healthcare clinicians, and corporate leaders.
First of all - I am so glad you are here. Reaching out for support can feel vulnerable and uncomfortable, but it's when we lean into those places of discomfort that growth can be found. I am inspired by IFS, mindfulness, CBT, self-compassion, and the work around shame and vulnerability and infuse each modality into my therapeutic work. I also value integrating the coaching philosophy into my therapeutic approach and I ultimately believe in the power of supporting each individual as a whole, unique person to create space for healing and overall well-being.

I work with high functioning professionals with trauma inducing work and/or previous Traumas. Often, this leads to things like: unwanted habits, exhaustion/fatigue, low self worth, moral injury, compassion fatigue, etc. If you are living a 'successful' life, yet feel you got lost in it somewhere, let's talk! Unfortunately, stigma for mh and sud issues also exists for providers. Coaching is a tool that can address your targeted pain points and produce results - safely, confidentially and with support of a peer with vast knowledge in these matters and how they impact our work and lives (and vice versa).

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
