” “Our son has come so far in the last months, but more than that, I’ve come so far! My husband and I have the tools needed to practice/improve our parenting skills.
Hello, from Emily and Wrigley (she’s the doggy in the picture), I'm a licensed family therapist with over 16 years of experience and Wrigley is my loyal sidekick creating a relaxing environment. I am passionate to help children and families overcome stressors and difficulties they are experiencing, such as: meltdowns/tantrums, sensory issues, ASD, anxiety, depression, fears/worries, and issues related to divorce. I’m a strong believer in hope and resilience of the human soul and healing can occur for families if they are believed in, build positive connections, and provided with professional guidance.

If you are a teenager, young adult, parent , or spouse you may often experience stress in your life. You may feel less connected, misunderstood, and overwhelmed with work or school. Although some stress is healthy, too much stress makes it even more challenging to create solutions and work through problems. Whatever the issue is, you would like to feel more connected and valued in your relationships, improve your ability to manage your stress and solve problems, overcome previous barriers, and have a better sense of who you are.

I also address relationship issues and parenting concerns.
I have been in private practice since 1992. Prior to earning my doctorate in clinical psychology, I was an elementary school teacher for seven years. About 70 percent of my current practice is with children and teens and 30 percent with adults, families, and couples. I absolutely love my vocation! I am privileged to join people on their journeys, to meet them where they are and go from there. I am committed to partnering with my patients to help them reach their full potential. I place a high value on the therapeutic relationship.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
