Hello, from Emily and Wrigley (she’s the doggy in the picture), I'm a licensed family therapist with over 16 years of experience and Wrigley is my loyal sidekick creating a relaxing environment. I am passionate to help children and families overcome stressors and difficulties they are experiencing, such as: meltdowns/tantrums, sensory issues, ASD, anxiety, depression, fears/worries, and issues related to divorce. I am Clinical Therapist with nearly 10 years of experience working primarily with children and teens. I use various play techniques and engaging activities to learn about the areas of need a child may have and what kinds of behaviors those needs have impacted. I am happy to work with parents who might be needing guidance or feedback regarding their children's behaviors or mental health needs as well. In addition to working with children, I also see some adolescents and young adults struggling with life changes and other mental health needs.

Are you a young professional who feels stuck in life, held back by anxiety, or lack of motivation because you don’t know where you want to go? Are you an athlete and know you could perform better if you were just more calm and in control of your emotions? Or maybe you have a child who is struggling with emotional regulation, flexibility and anxiety. I work with each of these populations to help the young professional thrive, the athlete maintain mental and emotional stability while performing and the child who’s anxious to calm fear and hyper vigilance.

Something needs to change, but you cannot put your finger on what that change is or how to go about making it. Life feels overwhelming and unrelenting and lacks meaning. Perhaps, you wonder what makes you YOU and what that means for your work or your relationships or personal self-growth. In therapy, we will holistically consider your story as we seek to restore balance and facilitate lasting change. You want to write new chapters in your story. Therapy can help you put pen to paper.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
