Hope, healing, wholeness. This is what we all want. But instead we sometimes feel despair, broken, and alone. We long to feel loved and understood. But often that doesn't happen. Something has gone wrong. Life is not what we had hoped. We are not who we want to be. Are you troubled by guilt, destructive behavior, discouragement or depression? Or perhaps it's marital problems, being a single adult, or adolescent issues. Maybe you struggle with a constant feeling of failure, the pain of
sexual abuse
, or the memory of bullying. There is help-and hope.

Coming to therapy is like drinking coffee with an old friend, except the difference is that this friend listens very closely, does not react negatively to what you say, and only provides productive feed back. Who wouldn't benefit from that? As a therapist I provide a comfortable and safe place for you to talk through some of those difficult moments in your life. Sometimes life is just hard and you just need a little extra help.

Laura Anne Mowle
Counselor, MA, LLPC, PLLC
This past year has produced new challenges impacting society on a global level. People never seeking therapy before are seeking help. Other clients are seeking assistance because they have experienced trauma, loss, depression and anxiety as children are finding that coping skills they were using are not working any more because of isolation and less available resources due to quarantine. Both situations can cause debilitating strain to relationships, employment, mental, and physical health. To keep my clients safe I am seeing clients virtually. Once the Center for Disease Control deems it safe I will begin seeing people in person.

Understanding that individuals have different schedules in their lives, we provide a variety of options in the morning, afternoon, evening, or weekends depending on your needs. Clients seek counseling wanting to be understood and know what to do about their problems. Fighting in circles without resolution, struggling to communicate or feel understood, and arguing or shutting down are all symptoms of relationship struggles. Low desire, affairs, and trust violations are symptoms of deeper relationship problems. I like helping people get down to business so they can understand and correct problems at the core. Clients love my genuine, straightforward approach and learn a lot in sessions. They leave feeling safe, with increased hope, and tasks to work on to improve their lives and achieve their goals.

NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. For the past 18 years, I've had the privilege of helping people of all ages through life challenges and heal from difficult experiences. Clients experience long-term change, due to interventions that are healing, supportive, and empowering. Trust and safety are established in an environment where people can feel understood, respected, and never judged, which is the most important thing to me to provide, as a therapist. Asking for help can be difficult and takes courage. I admire anyone willing to explore therapy as an opportunity for growth and healing.

As a licensed psychotherapist, I have experience working with a variety of issues. I believe that change happens when an individual experiences the therapeutic relationship as safe and nonjudgmental. This allows individuals to develop a voice and be heard. I support my clients in accessing their innate motivation to change while assisting them in re-evaluating patterns of thought and behavior that inhibit personal growth. I have been trained in therapeutic practices that are shown to be effective in helping clients to reach their personal goals.

You’re here. For now, this must be the place. For what, is up to you. Let’s be curious. What do you hope for? Let’s suspend judgement. What do you really want? What’s working well today? What isn’t? What are your options? Let’s be intentional. What will you choose? Let’s be compassionate. What might you soften, reframe, or re-do? Entering the process of counseling is like that classic song Under Pressure. Bowie and Queen said it so well: Can’t we give ourselves one more chance/…And love dares you to care for/The people on the edge of the night/ And love dares you to change our way of/ Caring about ourselves…/Under pressure…

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
