Much of my experience has been working with adults who are coping with depression and anxiety related to life transitions, relationship issues, grief and chronic illness.
Sudden or unexpected change, as well as an absence of change or being stuck, can bring on feelings that prevent us from living fully. Change may not be gentle or easy, but dedicated time with the right support can help move you toward improved well-being.

I work with couples, families, & individuals. My work is rooted in relationships & clients come to me feeling disconnected & stuck in unsustainable patterns without knowing how break free from the cycle. Often, clients have inherited these patterns from dysfunctional families or developed them to survive difficult times. The cycles are harder to change when facing depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, betrayal, grief , rejection, or the burden of cultural, religious, & family of origin expectations. Eventually, clients want to find a way to liberate themselves from this pattern but don't know what that looks like or where to begin.

I believe that counseling can be a powerful agent of positive change in many individuals' lives and can serve as a source of hope for those who might be feeling discouraged. I operate from a strengths-based perspective where we identify personal assets you possess to help work through current concerns. Another aspect of my counseling approach involves assisting you in exploring personal meaning in your life and incorporating humor, when appropriate. Some of my specialty areas include: relationship concerns/stressors, health concerns, depression, anxiety, trauma/vicarious trauma, work-related stress, grief / loss , & self-worth.

I specialize in supporting people navigating grief , loss , and people who are living with chronic, life-limiting, or serious illness.
I believe we all deserve to feel heard and to experience authentic connection with someone. My goal is to create a therapeutic relationship where you feel empowered and motivated to create positive change in your life. Sometimes we get stuck in patterns and need help to get back in touch with the most important relationship---the one we have with ourselves. This takes trust, support, time and accountability. My role as a therapist is as both a guide and as a witness, helping you to explore and overcome barriers to living fully by drawing upon your own strengths.

Some areas that have been my focus of practice are depression, trauma and PTSD, anxiety, grief and loss .
Counseling is a journey that is often filled with self-discovery, new awareness, and difficult choices. Telling your story can bring relief and a new way of looking at the world, and more importantly, a new way of looking at your life. Looking at where you might want to go in your life, or how you want to have better control over your emotions, behaviors, and thoughts are the challenges I’ll help you discover and manage. I have been working in the mental health and substance abuse field for almost 30 years and bring a variety of therapy techniques, expertise, and life experience to my work with clients.

Starting or returning to counseling is rarely easy; it often means that you are facing a challenge that does not have a simple solution. Sharing what is on your mind may be a relief, but for many people, it is also anxiety provoking. Whether your concerns are present-focused or have roots in the past, we can create a space where you can process and grow through the obstacles you are facing. Areas in which I have special knowledge include trauma, anxiety, grief and loss , and life transitions. During sessions, you can expect me to express empathetic understanding, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness.

I am grateful to have over 19 years experience working with adults who are courageously coping with a variety of challenges that include: coping with chronic medical issues & disease management, anxiety/stress, caregiver burnout, depression, fatigue, grief / loss and adjustment to life transitions.
We are living in a very trying time that can make us feel isolated, fearful and uncertain of the future. We may be experiencing emotions we have never felt before and don't quite know why or how to cope. Seeking therapy is not an all or nothing process, sometimes it is just needing someone to touch base with to help work through feelings or thoughts in a safe and non-judgmental space. Through exploration we can uncover barriers & work toward a healthier quality of life. Through discussion and reflection we become empowered to reconnect with our inner voice to help us feel more in control and less overwhelmed.

I have special interest in working with men, bereavement , trauma recovery and couples therapy.
When we're faced with adversity, we have two choices: to do nothing and hope that things improve on their own or to engage the problem and transform it. My approach to counseling is focused first on listening and then on helping my clients understand themselves and their ultimate concerns in a deeper way so that they can live fuller, happier lives. My practice uses evidence based treatments and is results oriented. Visit the Outcomes tab on my website for more information on my clinical outcomes.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
