Have you talked about your experiences in therapy but are still experiencing trauma symptoms? Are you frustrated because you know why you are struggling and still can't make it go away? Thinking only gets us so far in the healing process of trauma. As humans, we also need to work with the emotional and survival parts of the brain to heal and process traumatic experiences. Experiential and art therapies can help us decrease anxiety, panic, and depression and help us regain ownership of our emotions. Let's bring some joy back into our lives.

My passion and primary area of interest is working with children under the age of 10 dealing with issues of anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, divorce, grief, medical issues, behavioral problems, and more. I believe children have limitless potential for growth and they have an innate capacity for resiliency. I also believe that parents and primary caregivers play a critical role in a child's recovery and a joint approach to working with children is essential to healing.

Therapy is an opportunity for you to learn about yourself and make the changes you want or need to make emotionally, cognitively, relationally or behaviorally. It is an art that must be tailored to each person. My job as your therapist is to create an environment to help you grow and actively seize opportunities to make different choices and write your own story. I use empathy, active listening, and honest feedback while taking a problem solving approach. I'm careful not to make choices for you, but help you learn to make them for yourself.

I understand the very human struggles associated with managing intense emotions and thoughts without feeling consumed by them, living in the present moment without being haunted by memories of the past or worries about the future, and arriving at a place where our lives are dictated by us and our values, rather than by traumas and other stressful life experiences. At the heart of these very human struggles, there are often more paths than we realize toward resilience and self-compassion. My mission is to offer a therapy tailored to meet your unique needs, grounded in science, and guided by empirically supported best practices.

Vivian Greene wrote that "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain." My hope is that my clients can learn to dance in the rain. My goal is to help them to learn how. Each and every client has a special goal and I am willing to incorporate a variety of techniques to get them to that goal. As a therapist, I continually go to trainings and workshops to improve my practice. I am able to incorporate all of the strategies to create a path for each client.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
