Psychotherapy, if done well, provides participants with the gift of self-understanding. That self understanding, I have found, comes from the experience of being listened to and understood by a sensitive and knowledgeable therapist. But in addition, psychotherapy needs to practically address problems. I have extensive training in contemporary
psychoanalytic
approaches, which allows me to help patients understand themselves more deeply; often this produces profound changes. But when problems require practical techniques, I integrate aspects of cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and humanistic approaches.

In addition to my private psychotherapy practice, I teach and supervise psychotherapists,
psychoanalytic
candidates, and other clinicians.
The individuals, couples, and families with whom I work are interested in understanding and addressing not only certain specific emergent problems such as those associated with adjustment and relationship difficulties, depression, and anxiety, but also the underlying thoughts, feelings, and behavioral and relational patterns that have contributed to the development of these problems. Through a collaborative, empathic psychotherapeutic process, these individuals, couples, and families expand and utilize their skills, strengths, and self-understanding in order to live more meaningful and rewarding lives.

My mission is to help clients learn new strategies for coping with grief, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues and provide them with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which helps people identify their distressing thoughts and evaluate how realistic the thoughts are. Through CBT, clients can learn to change their distorted thinking. When they think more realistically, they can begin to feel better. The emphasis is also consistently on solving problems and initiating behavioral changes. My experience includes in-patient and out-patient psychiatry, community mental health, schools, and courts with a diverse range of people.

If you're struggling in a relationship, with a particular issue, or just don't feel like yourself anymore, therapy may be right for you. Here you'll find a relaxed and empathetic environment where you can safely identify and explore those issues that may be getting in the way of you experiencing a more fulfilling life or relationship. My goal is to not merely treat the symptom, but help you understand the underlying cause of it. So for instance, not just minimize the behavioral display of anger, anxiety or depression, or whatever the concern is, but help you understand why you're so prone to experiencing it. The result is that you'll become much more empowered to live and feel the way you want. And, you'll inevitably become more confident in dealing with your present concerns in a way that will make lasting positive change.

Psychoanalytic Therapists
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
