Throughout our existence, we all move through times that can bring an enormous amount of pain, anxiety, sadness, and even disturbance. Perhaps the days add up, and we end up living much of our lives in this suffering. If we hold on and search, its that deep person inside, the one just beneath the everyday routine, who can not only find the motivation to talk about these pains, but the inspiration to transform them into healing, meaning and purpose. When we take the lens and zoom in, every single one of us can find passion and vision. Joy and strength.

The goal for the clients at Hildreth Counseling are that he or she identify the issues, develop a plan of action, and then implement that plan. Counseling comes from many different theoretical orientations. I believe that the client or clients have the solutions to their dilemmas within one's self. We have the freedom to choose what directions our life takes and the responsibility to take control of that freedom. Therefore, the counselor does not have the "answers" to the client's "problem" but in a facilitator of the process that helps the client take responsibility and action and come to a resolution.

Sometimes we all need help finding our path through a difficult situation or relationship and I believe talking to a compassionate and empathetic person can be an invaluable asset on your journey. It can take a lot of courage to reach out to a stranger and talk about your problems, but once taking that step, you will be on a path to health and healing. Together, we can work through many of the tough issues you might be facing.

You wake up exhausted and dread facing the day ahead of you. Life feels heavy and everything seems like a burden. The anxiety or sadness you experience sometimes catches you unawares. It feels like you've tried every tool in your toolkit but something isn't clicking. You’ve had better days and you wish you could just make this feeling of angst go away. Trauma is a physiological response to a situation or event that overwhelms the body. As Peter Levine states “Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence”.

My role with clients is to be an observer, to transformation and change. Just as in metaphysics, having an observer changes the dynamics of the situation. In my role I don’t just observe but compassionately walk with those I work with and take a non-directive approach to what the individual perceives as precedent. Through mindfulness practices we aim to recenter the body, mind and felt sense of what the individual is processing. Through this somatic approach we emphasize the importance of feeling, what the mind is rationalizing. This may present itself as parts of us that come to light with observation and acknowledgement.

When life becomes overwhelming, therapy can be an opportunity to identify barriers to happiness, to manage the difficulties you're experiencing, and to feel better. Therapy offers an amazing opportunity to discover more about who you are and what it is we want. This work offers us a chance to grow and evolve, and to view the world more realistically with less distortion, denial and delusion, and to live in the freedom that comes to us seeing things they way that they really are. Therapy can help us find compassion for ourselves, to have patience with the unresolved, and find the courage to live more fully in the moment.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
