Adolescents and young adulthood can be a time of growth and change. It can also be a time filled with feelings of self-doubt and loneliness. You are being faced with challenges that didn't used to exist. Now more than ever adolescents and young adults ages 13 and up are experiencing increasing symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and difficulties with relationships. You are not alone and deserve to be heard. Your opinions and feelings matter! You have worth and your voice is valued. If judgment from others didn't exist, what dreams would you reach for? Imagine your life without needing the approval from others!

Feeling anxious, irritable, overwhelmed, or depressed? Sometimes these feelings come and go on their own naturally. Sometimes they become a little more persistent and we need some help moving past them. If you're struggling, you don't have to figure it all out on your own. You can get through this and get back to living the life you want to live.

Welcome! My name is Kennedi Ruhlman, LMSW, PMH-C. I’m glad you are here, the first step of reaching can be the hardest to take. What I have learned from my experience in the mental health field is that we may be able to walk alone in our struggles, but having someone alongside us is empowering. I strive to walk alongside those that I work with, while giving you full credit in knowing that you were able to reach your full potential. Everyone’s experiences are extremely unique, and I value staying open minded and accepting to each individual I encounter.

Navigating the challenges of life can easily become overwhelming. Working as a therapist for more than seven years has allowed me to recognize this as a truth for most people. This is why I want to offer my services to help you through whatever it is you may be enduring. I mostly work with adults, individually, on issues such as depression and anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions, defining and strengthening boundaries, finding a healthy balance in life, and identifying potential codependency.

New Pathways founders Jennifer Werries, PhD, LPC, ACS, NCC, EMDR Certified and Thomas Parella, PhD, LPC, and strive to deliver caring, effective treatment in a warm and welcoming environment. Working with a therapist can be a great way to gain new perspectives, explore new options and solutions that may have eluded us, and find ways of getting "unstuck" from situations in which we may have felt helpless. At New Pathways, we view counseling as a collaboration between therapist and client, who work together to understand issues, clarify thoughts and feelings, establish goals, and find ways to achieve a better quality of life.

We don’t always have it together. We often convince ourselves that we have it all together, however we are wounded, stuck, experiencing pain for different reasons. Depression is one issue that shows up and our society is playing a role in this. It’s as if a thief lurks in the depression telling us, “Don’t talk about it.” Isolation comes out of that message robbing us of the lives we were meant to have. Isolation is not where we belong. You don’t have to be stuck even if you don’t know where you are going. This used to be me over the years but, today, I continue to choose to not buy into the lie that I can’t talk about my life.

I view the professional relationship as one where we can build trust through transparency and dedication. Ideally, clients should be in a place where they are ready to work on their goals and issues. This will require looking closely at their life and identifying the parts where they would like improvement and then coming up with a plan together on how to implement skills to change those areas in their life they are not satisfied with.

How can I find a therapist in Midland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
