My experience includes addressing trauma/PTSD, substance use/abuse and recovery, anxiety, depression, transgender and gender dysphoria , and LGBTQ+ issues for adolescents and adults as an ally.
Over the past seventeen years as a therapist, one frequent obstacle I have come across is the commute people make for sessions. Having to take an extra hour (or more) of the day to commute, having to find child care, pick up kids from school, or find transportation in the first place often becomes a reason people don’t pursue therapy. Prior to Covid-19 I began working with telehealth and moved towards seeing everyone from their own home to remove this barrier.

We live in a society that was not made for most of us to survive or thrive in. We are constantly being told by our families, communities and society that we aren't good enough, we are too much, and that we have to change our authentic selves in order to be productive and successful in this world. This can lead to anxiety, stress, depression and other mental health struggles. But we don't have to fall into this. We can be ourselves. We can be happy. Not Like Them is for those people who are done trying to fit in and instead want to embrace their authentic self and live their life for them and them alone.

I specialize in helping Queer and Chronically Ill folx develop self-compassion to lead authentic lives. Whether you've experienced the cruelty of racism, transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, hyper-capitalism, or ableism, I believe it's possible for you to heal. Part of my job is acknowledging where and how harm has been caused and to help you explore how to exist in an unjust world. I have found addressing stigma, intergenerational trauma, and isolation are often the keys to lasting change.

I want to help clients who feel misunderstood, estranged from society, or who are dissatisfied with their daily life or current relationships. You may feel anxious in situations deemed normal by others or unmotivated to engage in everyday activities. You may believe that something is innately wrong with you or that you are overly sensitive. I provide a safe space for clients to process difficult thoughts and feelings, express their authentic voice, and identify how change is possible and within reach. I want to help improve your self-awareness and self-esteem, and learn how to prioritize self-care to build and maintain mental health

Although my clients are from all walks of life and situations, I work best when working with someone who identifies as LGBTQIA2S+, non-monogamous, on the kink/BDSM spectrum, and any overlapping identities thereof. My clients are either navigating change in their life (loss of a loved one, changing relationships, etc) or seeking to enact change in their life (reduction of mental health symptoms, building routine, etc). Along the way, they find their way to self-acceptance, self-compassion, and confidence. My clients want to build a collaborative partnership and want to build that partnership via telehealth.

Maya Angelou once said, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." Finding a therapist you feel safe telling your story to can be scary; not telling your story can be agony.

If this is your 1st or your 100th time seeking therapy, I want to let you know that you are one step closer to a better and healthier lifestyle. Harboring secret thoughts, feelings, shame, and guilt can be very difficult to handle on your own. Sharing these with a stranger can be difficult as well, but I do want to reassure you, it will be easier.

As a mental health therapist, I find that everyone has the potential to reach exactly what it is they are searching for if we simply work together to find what's holding us back. Combining our efforts, we can resolve difficult situations and identify your core strengths in order to empower you on your journey to success. Currently I work well with individuals who are struggling with gender transition, coming out as LGBTQIA+, bipolar disorder(s), depression, anxiety, mens’ issues and stressors related to education/work/family.

I believe it’s vital to support and encourage individuals going through hard times or transitioning in life. Everyone has goals and struggles that are unique to them, but for the most part, everyone just wants to feel better each day and to find ways to safely cope on the days where they don't feel so great. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD at an early age, I am passionate about helping others dealing with ADHD, especially women who were diagnosed as adults. I also enjoy working with individuals dealing with anxiety or depression, LGBTQIA+ folks, new parents, and people who just need to talk with someone.

What type of Lansing mental health professional is right for me?
While most types of therapy have a lot in common, they also fall into clusters that share core features, such as cognitive therapies or psychodynamic approaches. It is important to seek someone who practices evidence-based therapy, meaning one or more forms of treatment that have been scientifically evaluated and tested, and demonstrate consistent improvement for a majority of patients.

If you are unsure about choosing the right therapist or psychologist, it might be useful to first learn more about therapy types and modalities.

How to find a therapist or counselor in Lansing?
When looking to find a therapist, start by considering training and credentials. Studies also indicate that the therapeutic alliance, or the relationship the client develops with the therapist, is an important factor in their ability to work together to achieve the client’s goals.

What method of therapy is right for me?
When it comes to treatment methods, there's no 'right way.’ Each method of therapy can be beneficial for a variety of issues. Finding a psychologist or therapist who is a good fit for you is the most important step to discovering what type of therapy, or combination of therapeutic approaches, will meet your individual needs. Learn what to expect from different types of therapy and how they work.

How to use my insurance?
Understanding cost and insurance coverage is an important concern for many people. With some basic research and conversations with prospective therapists, you should be able to have a good understanding of the best way to afford therapy.
