My focus is treating teens through older adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, or serious mental illnesses. I enjoy walking with those facing life transitions such as moving from teen to young adult, going from college to the professional world, becoming a new parent, or entering retirement. There are so many difficult thoughts and emotions that come with these times in our lives, and I am here to help sort things out and help you feel positive about the choices you decide to make. In addition to an MSW, I hold an MDiv which equips me to incorporate
spirituality
into treatment if a client requests this.

It is my belief that people need truth to be emotionally and spiritually healthy. The Bible is the primary source of truth and directs the counseling services that I provide. My hope is that the loving compassion of Christ is evident in my counsel, whether I am visiting with a troubled married couple or an 8 year-old child who has been the victim of abuse. The identified desire of the client is the target of the counseling sessions and my goal to help each individual, couple or family experience freedom.

I love working with highly sensitive adults who are seeking meaning and balance. My clients feel disconnected and are looking to connect back into the wisdom of their body and spirit. Often my clients identify as women and family cycle breakers or are people who identify and want to change unworkable family patterns. I help people to build a calm presence so they can build awareness and curiosity about their lives. We are able to observe what factors are unhelpful and what factors are in alignment. My goal is to help clients shift into their strengths, recognize their worth, set healthy boundaries and build satisfying lives.

At Alicia Curry LLC, we know that you want to enjoy peace in your life. The problem is that you’ve been doing it on your own for so long. You don’t think that anyone understands you, and therefore they can’t help you. This leads to isolation and overwhelm. We understand what it’s like to doubt that anyone can help you. We believe no one should ever walk through distress alone. This is why we have spent the last 18 years helping teenagers and women cope with toxic relationships, grief, loss, sexual harassment, trauma, abuse, anxiety, and depression so they can heal and have a more fulfilling life.

With mindfulness- and compassion-based therapy, I support clients through grief & loss, relationship issues, healing from trauma, and searching for meaning & purpose. So many of the issues that bring people to therapy are natural responses to the challenges we face as human beings. Through the process of therapy, we bring curiosity and compassion to our inner experience; and in the safety of a non-judgmental space, we explore options for understanding and growth.

"I've often seen life as a big 'school room' in which the lessons can be fascinating, fun, sometimes frustrating, often difficult, and even traumatic. I feel privileged to have served a wide range of individuals and couples, gay, straight, young or old, as they have pursued their journeys toward health, recovery, balance and personal growth. I offer support and reflection, skill building and guidance as people confront and resolve their issues, doing so with as much love, compassion and humor as possible.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
