I am trained in motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, various approaches for trauma treatment, and utilize mindfulness to address many mental health concerns.
Everyone has experienced trauma: either "small-t trauma" such as grief/loss, verbal abuse/bullying, injuries/illnesses, or instability in the home or "large-T trauma" such as rape, assault, physical/sexual abuse, or debilitating injury/illness. As a result of trauma, some individuals experience disruptive memories and/or emotional distress from current situations. I assist clients in gaining insight on their situations as well as the development of specific skills and behaviors that will help to reduce emotional distress. I believe that every client has the ability to heal from trauma.

I will utilize concepts and skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness , Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to assist you through this process.
Everyone faces challenges in life and, at times, it is helpful to have extra support to work through those challenges. It is my hope that you will reach out for that support. As a licensed social worker, I have worked in the field for 6 years, working alongside adults as they navigate anxiety, depression, mood disorders, identity and many other concerns. I firmly believe that therapy is a collaborative process between the individual and the therapist. I value shared decision making and encourage open communication.

Addressing the diverse needs of children and families requires flexibility and creativity, so I use concepts and interventions from various evidence-based practices including Family Systems Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) informed strategies and interventions.
I primarily work with children, adolescents, and families. Many of my clients have struggled with life transitions, symptoms of anxiety, depression symptoms, and social skills. Parents are invited to come to sessions to support skills inside and outside the counseling session. Collaborating with the family supports allows for skill acquisition and client empowerment.

I have worked extensively with individuals across the life span with depression and anxiety using cognitive behavioral therapy, breath work and mindfulness . I see depression and anxiety as disorders of rumination, getting stuck in ruminative loops of thinking they cannot escape from. I understand that most humans will need some assistance as they deal with very complex relational and environmental stressors. Most clients have a difficult time with learning how to be observers of their thoughts and emotions. We do have good evidence that treatment can provide relief by developing habits that support change and restorative growth

With mindfulness - and compassion-based therapy, I support clients through grief & loss, relationship issues, healing from trauma, and searching for meaning & purpose. So many of the issues that bring people to therapy are natural responses to the challenges we face as human beings. Through the process of therapy, we bring curiosity and compassion to our inner experience; and in the safety of a non-judgmental space, we explore options for understanding and growth.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
