I primarily work with children, adolescents, and families. Many of my clients have struggled with life transitions, symptoms of anxiety, depression symptoms, and social skills. Parents are invited to come to sessions to support skills inside and outside the counseling session. Collaborating with the family supports allows for skill acquisition and client empowerment.

Who are we kidding? Life is crazy and we all need someone in our corner! You are a unique person, and your challenges are too. I'm here to help you make sense of the craziness. I grew up frequently moving between my parents and family, and untimely ended up in the foster care system. With substance abuse in my family system, being a child and adult child of a dysfunctional family is something with which I am very familiar. I decided to pursue my education and help others instead of perpetuating the toxic family system.

We all face trials, setbacks and challenges in life. One of the biggest struggles we all face is having healthy relationships. In order to have healthy relationships, we need to communicate effectively, resolve conflict sand be willing to forgive when offended. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families as they navigate relationships. I also work with people who have anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addictions, marital issues, spiritual struggles, parenting, identity issues and stress. The goal for my clients is to find freedom, peace and balance in their lives

Life is hard and at times it can feel overwhelming and difficult to find answers. Therapy should be a non-judgmental space to explore challenges and possibilities and also to work on healing hurts, setting goals, and moving from a place of merely surviving to a place of independently thriving.

Life is hard, and I’m here to help. As a therapist, I believe by making conscious choices we have the power to make purposeful change. If you're feeling anxious, sad, overwhelmed, or angry, I'm here for you. Sometimes we avoid our troubles, but they always seem to catch up one way or another. I want to walk alongside you through this season of life and guide you to the best version of yourself.

I believe that each person is the expert of their own experience. My role is not to tell you how to lead your life, but to listen and understand changes you want for yourself. Most of us have a difficult time being observers of our own thoughts and emotions, and my goal is to guide you. We do have good evidence that people begin to feel better when they feel heard. Together, we will create a collaborative, you-centered therapeutic relationship that supports the development of your personal insights with practical coping skills that help you live more fully in ways that are important to you.

My approach to counseling is collaborative in nature. While I have training and experience with counseling modalities and mental health, you are the expert on your own life. By working together, I hope to help you achieve your goals and cultivate positive coping skills. I aim to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for creative self-exploration, to address particular diagnoses such as anxiety and depression, and to provide support in navigating difficult situations.

My compassion for all beings began long ago and has been the cornerstone of my personal and professional life. It is the compelling reason I practice counseling. I am profoundly aware of the vast amounts of suffering we all experience throughout our lives. Experiencing and releasing this pain is the goal. I believe in the emergence of self knowledge, positive energy and right action as fear and resistance are diminished. I prefer not to label conditions and symptoms ,but strive to fully understand and appreciate the individual sitting before me.

My focus is treating teens through older adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, or serious mental illnesses. I enjoy walking with those facing life transitions such as moving from teen to young adult, going from college to the professional world, becoming a new parent, or entering retirement. There are so many difficult thoughts and emotions that come with these times in our lives, and I am here to help sort things out and help you feel positive about the choices you decide to make. In addition to an MSW, I hold an MDiv which equips me to incorporate spirituality into treatment if a client requests this.

I believe that most people come to counseling after many attempts to solve their problem other ways, but have found that those efforts have not led to an outcome that fits, or has been able to last over time. Counseling provides an opportunity to explore aspects of one's self and relationships in ways that lead to increased awareness and greater fulfillment and meaning in relationships and various aspects of one's life.

We can't determine the cards we get dealt, but we can decide how they get played. As a therapist, I am honored to walked alongside anyone who desires to explore personal goals that they may have and grow to be a better version of themselves. I believe each person deserves that opportunity no matter what their life may look like. I have experience working with youth diagnosed with severe emotional disturbances, family conflict, female survivors of domestic violence, refugees, as well as young adults on college campus.

Counseling is a journey that is often filled with self-discovery, new awareness, and difficult choices. Telling your story can bring relief and a new way of looking at the world, and more importantly, a new way of looking at your life. Looking at where you might want to go in your life, or how you want to have better control over your emotions, behaviors, and thoughts are the challenges I’ll help you discover and manage. I have been working in the mental health and substance abuse field for almost 30 years and bring a variety of therapy techniques, expertise, and life experience to my work with clients.

How can I find a therapist in Kalamazoo?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
