Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC, LLMFT, NCC
I believe in the power of therapy to be a catalyst for growth, to gain new perspectives for tackling challenges, and to improve dynamics between individuals and within families. However, it all starts with relationship. I am committed to creating an inviting, safe space for my clients. My sixteen years as a progressive educator provide the roots of my growth-oriented approach and are the foundation on which I work to collaborate with clients when learning new skills, new perspectives or processing painful life events.
I am thrilled to be able to offer counseling services to people that live in the West Michigan area. Although, I specialize in the treatment of children and adolescents, I also enjoy working with individuals and couples. If you are having difficulty with adjusting to new life circumstances, having relationship issues, or if you are a person that is living with a Mental Illness I am eager to help you work through your situation. Life is too short to face your problems alone and I am always willing to listen and help you work towards a new way to face your life's challenges.
I believe that counseling can be a powerful agent of positive change in many individuals' lives and can serve as a source of hope for those who might be feeling discouraged. I operate from a strengths-based perspective where we identify personal assets you possess to help work through current concerns. Another aspect of my counseling approach involves assisting you in exploring personal meaning in your life and incorporating humor, when appropriate. Some of my specialty areas include: relationship breakups/general relationship stressors, depression, anxiety, trauma/vicarious trauma, work-related stress, grief/loss, & self-worth.
My compassion for all beings began long ago and has been the cornerstone of my personal and professional life. It is truly the only reason I practice counseling. I am profoundly aware of the vast amounts of suffering we all experience throughout our lives. Experiencing and releasing this pain is the goal. I believe in the emergence of self knowledge, positive energy and right action as fear and resistance are diminished. I prefer not to label conditions and symptoms ,but strive to fully understand and appreciate the individual sitting before me. * The additional stress of our times cannot be ignored or minimized*
Is your child, you, or your family feeling overwhelmed? As a licensed clinical therapist with Kalamazoo Child and Family counseling, I guide children and their families in addressing behavioral issues by using a variety of treatment approaches that include; psycho-education, parenting skills, relaxation, affect modulation and regulation, and cognitive coping. Utilizing trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, relaxation, Theraplay principles, and EMDR, children and families gain an understanding of the root cause of behavioral issues, develop healthy coping techniques, & strengthen the parent/child relationship.
**NOTE: Not currently accepting new clients** Feeling overwhelmed? Lost? "Out-of-Wack?" In a "funk?" Tired of feeling "blah?" Let's work together to take back control over YOUR LIFE. My goal is to help clients meet their personal & emotional goals & find successes in other areas of their life. I provide counseling with individuals (of all ages), couples & families with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, grief, stress management & relationship issues. I want to help you be able to take the skills you learn, your healed parts & the strength that you find within yourself & use them in all areas of your life.
I am a licensed psychologist whose experience involves working with individuals and couples with a variety of concerns since 2005. My approach to counseling focuses on facilitating healing and growth by integrating the many important aspects of the whole person, including thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relationships, and spiritual beliefs. I integrate techniques from cognitive-behavioral and humanistic theories of psychotherapy and work with people on optimizing their relationships.
All of us will have times in our lives when we meet challenges that are difficult to deal with alone. During these times, therapists can provide the support and guidance that we need to identify our strengths and resources and learn new ways to deal with our problems.
I have over 25 years experience working with teenagers, young adults, and parents. My clinical experience includes juvenile delinquency, School performance issues, Bullying, Parent/Teenager conflict, Male issues, foster care, parenting, and individual therapy. My experience has given me the ability to connect and develop a healthy therapeutic relationship with you. I utilize a strengths-based approach in therapy to draw upon the inherent strengths of individuals and families.
I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of Aaron Beck, M.D. in 1983. I am a Founding Fellow of the Academy for Cognitive Therapy. My primary interest and expertise is in helping people identify and break free from the negative life patterns that underlie long-standing depression, anxiety, and painful relationships. My style is systematic, focused, collaborative and flexible. I see my first task as creating a safe and stable foundation from which clients can begin to meet their core emotional needs and grow.
I believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. My goal as a counselor is to empower my clients to make necessary changes in their lives, to understand their value, and to reach their goals and highest potential.
I believe therapy should take place in a safe, supportive, empowering, and confidential environment. Clients are active in the process, exploring areas including feelings, beliefs, and behaviors while working through personal history and identifying aspects of their lives they wish to change. Clients take a journey to better understanding of themselves and others. We will set personal goals, and work together toward desired change through reflection, processing and skill building. When working with children I work with the child individually and also invite parents/guardians into session to learn skills to utilize at home to support the child with change.
