Heidi L. Sura
Clinical Social Work/Therapist, MSW, LLMSW
Hello All. I am a former English teacher/tutor turned licensed therapist. I love listening to stories and helping people figure out their strengths, abilities and goals. I specialized in trauma while I was in school and have worked with both children and adults. I have worked with the amazing Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center in Roscommon as well as with Adult Services and the wonderful people at DHHS. My background is well rounded, and while I tend to lean toward the Marvel Universe v. DC, I can talk a mean game of basketball and enjoy Sunday football with the family. I look forward to hearing your stories and needs.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with a variety of work experiences and many skillsets. Most of my work experience has been working with mental health, substance abuse, and/or co-occurring populations both with
adolescent
and adults. I have years of experience working on inpatient psychiatric units and 2 + years of experience working as an outpatient therapist. As a younger minority male clinician, I tend to use my presence to influence and/or motivate males to seek or receive services being that mental health and substance abuse services are highly stigmatized.

Sometimes, finding hope and purpose can be really difficult. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, relationship issues,
teenager
adjustments, or even an addiction, the storms of life can be challenging, but you don’t have to weather those storms alone. Everyone deserves to feel hope…everyone deserves to live life with purpose. As a counselor, I've had the privilege of walking with hundreds of people through heavy and often overwhelming seasons in their lives. One of the many things I've learned is that your past does not need to define your future. Restored health, hope, and purpose can be your reality.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
