Originally trained in the psychodynamic tradition, I utilize a variety of approaches including Internal
Family Systems
, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, TEAM ( a highly effective therapy developed by David Burns - Stanford University), Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, and Brainspotting.
For the past 30 years, I have had the privilege of helping individuals achieve their goals and overcome a variety of difficulties including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, relational struggles, and life transitions. My hope is that each individual I work with will gain a better understanding of themselves and their context and also learn valuable skills to move forward towards a more fulfilling and flourishing life.

My trauma-informed approach draws from
IFS
, Polyvagal Theory, and somatic therapy and goes far beyond symptom management.
By the time I was 24, I had been diagnosed with OCD, PTSD, depression, anxiety disorder & panic disorder. I intimately know the affliction of mental health struggles. After years of lived personal experience with trauma & a myriad of diagnoses; a two decades long healing journey involving seeing over 50 different practitioners and tens of thousands of dollars; countless hours of training; and 2 master's degrees, I have honed an approach to therapy that weaves ancient wisdom, contemporary neuroscience, and compassionate inquiry into a tapestry of healing. And unlike most therapists, I only treat what I have personally experienced.

Rich and meaning-filled living is our birthright. Relationships, current life situation, inner struggle, the way we are wired or past experience can interfere with our natural capacity to thrive. With 30 years of experience as a therapist, I believe our conflicts and struggles are the doors through which our growth comes. I devote my practice and continued learning most powerful ways to support the fullest flourishing possible for each of us, no matter our circumstance. With this in mind, I work with individuals, couples, families, and groups. I also use on-going evaluation to insure our work together is effective and satisfying.

I approach treatment with an integrated psychodynamic, internal
family systems
, and narrative therapy lens.
I enjoy working with adolescents, teens, and adults as they explore their identities and core values, process trauma, and find meaning in their experiences. My experiences growing up in a rural community, serving in the church, in human resources, and in social justice work have made me passionate about walking alongside people who have experienced marginalization and trauma in the workplace, in the church, at school, and in their communities – especially around issues related to sexuality and gender. And if you identify as a gamer, a nerd, or a geek, we will have a lot of shared language to do this work together!

I offer a trauma informed approach, utilizing mindfulness based CBT, internal
family systems
, and acceptance and commitment therapy.
Welcome! I'm glad you're here. My passion in therapy is helping people find healing from addictions, anxiety, depression, and disordered eating through developing a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them. This can often look like simply having a compassionate space to talk through feelings and needs, and sometimes it takes a deeper dive into some old wounds and patterns that can leave us feeling stuck or overwhelmed.

Maybe you feel yourself start to close off when someone asks how you're doing, because you don't really know the answer. Maybe you're a parent, who doesn't recognize who your teen has become. Maybe your partner doesn't feel like your partner, this relationship doesn't look like how you envisioned it would anymore. Maybe depression, guilt, or shame have become so familiar, that you wonder what therapy would even do. Maybe you just want to be known by someone.

Life can throw a lot at us on any given day. Sometimes we can be overwhelmed by the chaos of the world, by the marginalization inflicted by systemic policies and institutions, or by our own internal conflicts. Embracing change and growth can define a path forward and allow hope to be our guide to wellness. The power to heal ourselves lies in empowerment AND advocacy. We must acknowledge both the impact of external factors rooted in the world and in the internalization of suffering and trauma.

Being heard and validated are two of the most powerful avenues to feeling a sense of belonging and worth. Unfortunately, we run into situations in life that shut us down, tell us our life experience doesn't count, and we leave those situations feeling empty and uncertain about what we've done wrong. Through therapy, we learn to find ourselves through our values and we learn new skills to navigate the hills and valleys of life so that when those situations come up, we can come out of them stronger and more sure of ourselves. I look forward to walking that path alongside you while you discover how you can have a full life and thrive.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.
How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.
Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.
How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
