Peace and harmony are qualities that can be learned and then transmitted to current and future relationships regardless of the
pain
we are currently experiencing.
My style is warm, with a desire to continually learn and use new skills that best suit the "hopeful" and the "hopeless." My life has been spent working with individuals and families and their experiences with sexual, substance, or physical abuse and trauma.

Anxiety, depression, and difficult family relationships are foundational to life's
pain
.
I've been in practice 25 yrs - with individuals/couples & families -- kids 6+, many teens, college students & adults. I'm shamelessly informal -- no ties or pressed shirts here!. The office is quite unique - - very large, ultra comfy, w/MANY natural oddities... slightly chaotic -- like life! Good strong coffee/tea/soda & munchies always available. Pets welcome. I'm adopted myself, a licensed foster parent, & work with trauma and attachment. I have a multi-cultural family & lived abroad (Africa). I do co-parenting therapy & am also very familiar w/court systems, working with Dr.'s, lawyers, schools and custody issues.

As Rumi said, "the cure for the
pain
is in the
pain
.
By the time I was 24, I had been diagnosed with OCD, PTSD, depression, anxiety disorder & panic disorder. I intimately know the affliction of mental health struggles. After years of lived personal experience with trauma & a myriad of diagnoses; a two decades long healing journey involving seeing over 50 different practitioners and tens of thousands of dollars; countless hours of training; and 2 master's degrees, I have honed an approach to therapy that weaves ancient wisdom, contemporary neuroscience, and compassionate inquiry into a tapestry of healing. And unlike most therapists, I only treat what I have personally experienced.

Each client is unique and brings with them their own experiences, hopes, disappointments, successes and traumas. As such, my counseling practice is largely informed by a cognitive behavioral philosophy with the general goals that the client can identify the issues, develop a plan of action and implement it.

Therapy is about uncovering desire. It is an adventure in moving past, dissolving or reducing painful problems and embracing life, love and relationships. It is more than words; it is experiencing oneself in ways that are meaningful, whatever that looks like for each person. I work with individuals and couples (gay, straight, poly, trans), who want more from their lives. I believe there is always hope and possibilities and I passionately work with people to discover opportunities for more of what they want in life.

Life is rough at times. We can't always do it on our own. Sometimes we need professional guidance and support. I provide therapy services to adults and adolescents who are struggling with relationships, depression, or anxiety. My style is eclectic--I blend various schools of thought from my training and 25+ years of experience. I'm also interactive--I don't just reflect back what you've already said. Instead, I listen, use empathy, and focus my responses to help you get "unstuck" and accomplish the goals you want.

People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

Experiencing an emotional or personal issue that is restricting your ability to enjoy life? I help clients work on those things that are getting in the way, such as, problematic emotional, behavioral or relational patterns, stress, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Life is really hard at times and it can help to have some extra support, especially, if you are feeling alone, isolated or finding that others don't really understand. NOTE: I am now offering tele-therapy over video as an option for therapy.

Life brings many changing seasons that present new challenges and struggles. Throughout the seasons of life, you can find meaning and hope. People who decide to reach out and seek to find meaning and hope are courageous. It can be difficult to be honest and look at your life's path; however, I am continually amazed at each client's strength and desire for freedom in their life. I thoroughly enjoy providing additional support that can meet each client's needs. I primarily work with female-identifying adults who are wanting to rediscover their identity and increase their own sense of empowerment.

I began my career working in relational ministry with teens. I quickly learned about building trust and what an honor it is to walk alongside clients in both struggle and joy. I believe counseling is one of the best choices we can make for ourselves. It is often difficult to seek help and it takes courage to take care of our own needs. I will do my best to meet you where you are, to listen and provide support and perhaps a new perspective. Counseling allows us to be kinder to ourselves, learn new skills and lead richer lives.

My personal theoretical foundation is not limited to one approach. I believe it is necessary for counselors to be adaptive. Every client is different and our responses and approaches should be equally diverse. One person may need a cognitive behavioral approach whereas another would be more responsive to brief counseling. This eclectic approach will be applied to all clients. Techniques will vary between clients to best meet the individual client's needs.

I work with people to find balance, reduce stress, feel stronger, more confident and centered. Together, we will work to identify patterns of thinking and behaving that are no longer useful, and may be getting in the way of the changes you want to make. With support, in a confidential setting, you can begin to improve your relationship with yourself, and with others. I work with couples in a similar way, identifying and changing patterns of thinking, communicating and relating so that you can improve communication, get more support, and feel more connected.

You have taken a very important first step by considering going to therapy and looking into your options for a provider. I came to join the Advanced Counseling practice after working at an agency dedicated to the treatment of individuals with substance use disorders. I worked in the treatment of addictions for twenty five years, which allowed me to help a great many people with a wide variety of issues. I think therapy is the process of making connections and having the safe space to explore, express and renew.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
