People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

My goal is to spark change in people’s lives and relationships. I believe that everyone has the ability to make changes. I use a holistic approach to help people develop a deeper understanding of themselves on all levels. The process of therapy is a great tool to help you grow when you are ready to do the work and unlock your innate capability to explore yourself. Therapy is about being there to help people explore their histories, uncover patterns and make choices to let go and move forward. If you are struggling because life has given you obstacles with communication and connections, I want to help you take back your life.

I began my career working in relational ministry with teens. I quickly learned about building trust and what an honor it is to walk alongside clients in both struggle and joy. I believe counseling is one of the best choices we can make for ourselves. It is often difficult to seek help and it takes courage to take care of our own needs. I will do my best to meet you where you are, to listen and provide support and perhaps a new perspective. Counseling allows us to be kinder to ourselves, learn new skills and lead richer lives.

Are you new to college or high school and feeling overwhelmed? Maybe the thought of interacting with your peers or speaking in front of others feels scary. Perhaps you're struggling with motivation and finding it difficult to complete your work, causing you to fall behind. Maybe you're a perfectionist, and the idea of not getting this school-thing just right is terrifying for you. Do you ever look around and feel like everyone else knows what they're doing and who they are, but you're just... lost? Maybe even getting up in the morning feels impossible right now. I want you to know that you're not alone, and you can feel better.

We all go through valleys and peaks in our lives. Sometimes the only way to get out of a deep pit is through grasping the hand that is there to help you. I have seen personally what can happen with the help of someone who offers unconditional support and encouragement, moving one out of the darkness and into the light. I am particularly passionate about holistic health and wellness and believe we are all on a journey toward better health. In addition to my Master's Degree in Social Work, I have completed a certificate through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and enjoy bringing all areas of wellness in greater focus.

Maybe you feel yourself start to close off when someone asks how you're doing, because you don't really know the answer. Maybe you're a parent, who doesn't recognize who your teen has become. Maybe your partner doesn't feel like your partner, this relationship doesn't look like how you envisioned it would anymore. Maybe depression, guilt, or shame have become so familiar, that you wonder what therapy would even do. Maybe you just want to be known by someone.

Life can throw a lot at us on any given day. Sometimes we can be overwhelmed by the chaos of the world, by the marginalization inflicted by systemic policies and institutions, or by our own internal conflicts. Embracing change and growth can define a path forward and allow hope to be our guide to wellness. The power to heal ourselves lies in empowerment AND advocacy. We must acknowledge both the impact of external factors rooted in the world and in the internalization of suffering and trauma.

Michael specializes in generalized anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, social anxiety, PTSD. and more—using CBT for superior outcomes. CBT is great for depression and mood disorders, as well. Michael also works closely with couples, addressing the misconceptions they can bring into their relationships, including "The other person must make me happy" . . . "If I can change the other person, my life would be better" . . . "If you cared about me, you wouldn't do those things" . . . and other errors that could lead to a breakup or divorce. Whether you need individual or relationship counseling, my goal is to help mend brokenness in people.
