Samantha Corey: "Most of my clients tell me they feel very relaxed and calm during our sessions, my family and friends tell me the same thing, I've come to learn after 20 years of providing therapy that I'm of no help to anyone if I can't give them a sense of peace in their often chaotic world. Isn't that why we come to therapy, we can't find that peace and calm or the answers we seek on our own, lets figure things out together."

Sometimes we all need to talk to someone, to get feedback, direction, or just to sort things out. Sometimes things build up and it can be difficult to figure out the next direction. It can feel overwhelming to try to navigate through life and to know how to handle things, whether it is stress, anxiety, depression, family issues or multiple other things that weigh us down or keep us up at night. We can feel like we might be judged for how we have handled things, but the truth is that we all need help to figure things out at some point.

You are lying in your bed at 3:00am and you're not sure what went wrong or how things in your life got so derailed. It seems like there is no end to this nothingness you are feeling. This isn’t how you thought life would unfold for you. You can't connect the dots to how you got here, and you certainly can't envision where to go next for things to feel better. Or maybe you're part of a couple, and you don’t recognize the person lying next to you anymore, and you don’t know what happened in your relationship: you think you loved this person - you know you did love this person - but you have no idea how things got so disconnected.

As a counselor for over 20 years, I get how overwhelming life can be. You might be wondering, "How can I go forward? Who am I now?" It might be hard to imagine you'll ever feel normal or happy again. You might wonder if it is even worth it. We'll look at your history to make sense of what happened, and how you got through it. Looking at how you've changed, and what you want now can be overwhelming. Together we can sort it out. As a cancer survivor I offer insight into navigating significant life changes, and options for growth. Figuring out who to lean on, and options to strengthen your spirituality can help with healing, as well.

We are all wired for connection – it’s why were all here, what makes our lives feel fulfilled. But trauma rewires the brain for protection. “Trauma” rewrites the way we interpret the world. It “hacks” our brain. Whether big or small, trauma impacts us all. We've all experienced it. Trauma responses greatly vary, but often are related to fear/shame/blame, anxiety and panic attacks, dissociation, and trouble concentrating. If you feel past or current traumas are overwhelming you, I can help.

First of all, I have respect for anyone who walks in the door of a counselor’s office. I think it is a scary endeavor, at least it was for me. It takes a lot of courage to honestly confront your story. Because counseling is primarily about relationship and trust, I think the only main prerequisites are the willingness to be honest, sometimes brutally, honest, and the courage to start taking some new steps.

Wherever you go, there you are...and that is where I want to meet you. If you feel that life has become unbearable, unmanageable or something just "isn't right" about your current situation, you're in the right place. I'm here to understand you, fully. I am here to embrace you as you are, without judgement and with reverence to what got you here today. My goal is not to "help you" as much as it is to give you the tools, support, empathy and understanding you need so you can not only "help yourself", but become your truest self.

I specialize in sex and internet pornography addiction. I work one-on-one with indivuals, couples, families, and those attracted to minors. My primary treatment goal is to help the sexually addicted individual overcome the addiction and find inner healing. Additionally, I work to promote healing within badly damaged intimate relationships. Initially, I aim to help clients gain immediate relief from the feelings of overwhelm and distress that brought them to counseling to begin with. Subsequently, I collaborate with clients to diagnose and heal the deeper sources and causes of their suffering and addiction.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
