I am a licensed counselor in the State of Michigan. I was a psychiatrist in China 25 years ago, while I no longer practice as a medical doctor, this experience helps my work as a mental health counselor. My scope of practice includes working with individuals experiencing challenges of physical, mental, psychiatric, developmental, cognitive, intellectual or chronic illness affecting functioning; I also work with couples and families; offer services to service members, veterans, and their families. Together, we will work on understanding how cognitive, behavioral, biological, and social learning factors contribute to our life.

My areas of focus are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and Behavioral Activation.
If I could fix one thing for every person, it would be perfect sleep! Since I don't have a magic wand, yet, I prioritize using structured interventions to meet tangible goals. Our work together will be more directive then traditional talk therapy, but you're the boss and I'm here to help you figure out those directions.

Do sadness and worry often trouble you? Life's stresses can be overwhelming at times leading to feelings of loneliness, fear, and despair. If you struggle with anxiety or depression, you already know how it can interfere with who you are and the way you want to live your life. Because the mind and body are so interconnected, these problems may be affecting your physical well-being as well. You know that you need to do something, but you may not be certain where to turn for the help you need to overcome these difficult issues.

If stress is the only way you get through executive dysfunction, I'm here to work it out with you. With a trauma-informed approach, I’ll support you in navigating ADHD, anxiety, relationships, and more. With clients that understand the "why" and feel frustrated with typical talk therapy, I use somatic experiencing to help your body process emotions and "feel your feelings" nonjudgmentally to explore what you need to feel safe. Come as you are (even with a snack or your pet!) and be vulnerable on your own time as we build trust. We'll get there when we get there, if we get there, if you want to get there.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
