Life's struggles and experiences can cause us to feel overwhelmed, or even at times, out of control. We want to change how we are feeling or how our child feels, but we don't know how. We all experience moments like this in our lives and often we can persevere. At times though we need some help, and that's okay.

Life can get hard. There are countless obstacles that we encounter on a daily basis that can be overwhelming at times. When trying to make it through the day these obstacles sometimes present a weight that feels insurmountable. In addition, life can sometimes seem isolating and debilitating. I believe that the core component of a successful therapeutic relationship is, in fact, the relationship. Making the changes one desires is achievable through a collaborative, trusting, and compassionate dynamic.

My time working in an elementary school especially shaped my passion for supporting children ages 3–10 with emotional regulation, attention challenges, anger, and behavioral outbursts.
I also have a special interest in supporting youth with problematic sexualized behaviors and in working with boys who may be struggling with porn addiction or other risky and impulsive sexual concerns. It can be hard to know where to turn in a time of struggle and I deeply value family and caregiver partnerships when working with sensitive situations.

What situation qualifies for counseling? My answer to that is being human. Many believe that counseling is only necessary for major life events. The truth is you do not have to be on the high end of the stress spectrum to seek professional support. Life can be hard. Counseling provides a supportive and nonjudgmental space to process all circumstances.

I use EMDR, somatic therapy, CBT, and person-centered approaches to help clients process trauma, manage emotions (including anger), and shift long-standing patterns.
My ideal clients are adults and older adults who feel stuck in patterns shaped by trauma—whether from a single event or years of smaller, cumulative wounds. They may be navigating anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, addiction, or caregiver burnout, and include those with legal system involvement working to rebuild and move forward. Some clients are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and others are navigating the complexities of having caused harm and working toward accountability and change. What they share is a desire for relief, clarity, and a more meaningful way of living. Each client simply needs space that feels safe enough to begin.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
