As people, we are constantly growing and evolving into new versions of ourselves. Sometimes that growth is uncomfortable and scary, especially in the chaotic times we’re living through. We were never meant to suffer alone. I view my role as forming a socially supportive environment where we can work through the challenges that come with being human together. My goal is to provide a safe and supportive space where we can process through these growing pains together and the support, knowledge, and tools that can make growth and change less scary.

My work is grounded in a person-centered approach, meaning sessions move at your pace and focus on what matters most to you. When anxiety feels constant, depression makes everything heavier, or anger starts showing up in ways you do not like, it can be hard to know where to begin. Therapy can be a place to slow down and talk through what is really going on without feeling judged or rushed. I offer secure online therapy across Michigan, making it easier to meet from home, during a break in your day, or wherever you feel most comfortable and private.

Whitney Thiry
Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LMSW, IMH-E

I’m Whitney, they/them, I'm trans, and I’m a therapist :) I show up to therapy as a fellow human to get to know you and be part of your growth. My practice as a therapist has grown through the lens of Infant Mental Health which emphasizes the role of relationships and play in healing. Within a caring relationship we can find the strength to tell our story, feel our feelings, and connect to the parts of ourselves we’re afraid of. I particularly like working with queer people of all ages to help them love and care for the babies inside them.

Hello, I am a bilingual and bicultural, Mexican-American therapist who works with Latino and other BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and neurodivergent adults and youth — including high-achievers and those navigating life’s challenges — to address ADHD, anxiety, and identity-related stress within the context of cultural and personal expectations. I understand how challenging it can feel to manage expectations, juggle multiple responsibilities, and navigate cultural, and other intersectional spaces and identity pressures while staying true to yourself.

As much as I would like to offer this, I am not here to change/stop/delete your thoughts and feelings. I don't believe that's possible, even if we can sometimes ignore them for a couple hours. More often than not, the time, attention, and energy we pour into trying to get control of these moves us farther away from our values and goals than closer to them anyways. I view my role as a therapist as someone here to help change your relationship to those thoughts and feelings instead, so that we don’t have to wait for them to disappear before living a richer, fuller life.

My office is a supportive and calm space where you can show up exactly as you are. I believe everyone is capable of healing and finding joy and satisfaction in their life. Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
