Life has many challenges that we struggle with, many coming internally from our own minds. I can help navigate you through your journey to overcome intrusive, negative self-talk, low self-esteem and self-worth, trauma, and to assist with changing that inner voice that tells you, “you have to be perfect.” Using art therapy as well as CBT techniques, I work with students and professionals who are struggling with identity, life transitions, depression, and anxiety. Together we can work together to gain insight, develop coping skills and mindfulness techniques, defeat the negative self-talk, and create a life worth living.

Trauma can be understood as any extraordinarily stressful experience in life that has a lasting negative impact on someone. People who have suffered from PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, Traumatic Events, Relationship Devastation, Emotional Neglect, Job Loss, and/or loss of a loved one often lost faith in counseling because regular talk therapy may have helped somewhat, but they didn’t actually “feel” (physically) better. Yet many symptoms and difficulties still plagued a person, even if they were “thinking right” about a past incident and trying to “move on.” It's time for a new approach. Trauma-Informed Interventions go beyond talk.

We all want to change in some way, and I believe that real, visible change comes from an internal motivation to be better versions of ourselves. By looking at the uncomfortable or unexamined parts within ourselves, that positive change becomes possible.

As a Marriage & Family Therapist/Counselor my goal is to provide families, couples and individuals with a safe environment where they can explore themselves and the possibility of change within their life and their relationships. Our lives are centered on relationships with others. Relationships are the building blocks of life; but, they can also be very debilitating. When those relationships become troubled, sometimes assistance from family and friends may not be enough to find balance within yourself or other relationships. Lucky for us, there are people who have dedicated their lives to helping others along their journey.

I enjoy working with people of various backgrounds, especially adults and teens in the LGBTQ+ community and individuals with trauma history. I also have experience with survivors of sexual trauma and sex trafficking. Using a mix of evidence-based theories like Internal Family Systems, along with a somatic, multicultural and feminist lens, I aim to provide a safe, supportive environment where you can explore all the parts of yourself. I believe the key to progress in therapy is curiosity and commitment to change, and my goal as your therapist is to walk alongside you as you discover your own personal power.

It's not easy taking the first step to get help. I recognize that it is often the work of weeks, months, or even years to reach out and request therapy services. Your story is unique, and it is my goal to help you find a sense of safety and security in my counseling office, and to find your way to wholeness and well-being. Your relationships, your environment, loss, successes and failures, these are all building blocks that affect how you think and feel and how you process life's challenges. It can feel overwhelming trying to make sense of it all. My goal is to help you gain that clarity.

Do you fit in? Your silent thoughts to yourself question whether others really understand you. It’s tough because you’ve tried so hard to reach out and be friendly and even demonstrate care and compassion for others. Nevertheless, you wonder if that same care get’s directed back at you. Sometimes it feels like you don’t fit in. Do you have questions about whether this means that there is something wrong with you? Probably not! In life, striving to fit in can be an empty pursuit. What if you could switch that and really feel that you belonged instead of just fitting in.

Life can be like a roller coaster with many highs and lows. Our past experiences will impact our perspective throughout life, often causing us to shift the way we see things or behave. Past experiences may cause you to constantly worry about your future or the future of your loved ones. Past experiences may make you feel down or put you in a dark place that feels impossible to come out of. Your past may make you feel like you are not good enough or worthy to be loved. Sometimes, you may even feel that you don’t deserve the life that you want.

How can I find a therapist in Grand Rapids?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
