The teenage years can feel daunting for both teens and parents and asking for help can be a scary step. Therapy can be an even scarier step. The courage it takes to acknowledge the impact of life stressors on your confidence and emotional wellbeing can feel monumental. The expectation to navigate
family
and life transitions without a supportive guide can feel crippling especially while struggling to find healthy ways of thinking and problem solving.

Whatever it is, you want to understand it and move on. My aim is to help you clarify your goals, discover the root causes of your feelings and symptoms, help you find awareness of faulty beliefs, and create a plan for change in a warm and caring environment.

I strive to provide an environment/relationship where diverse identities are welcomed and cherished as we seek to know you better within the context of your
family
, culture and the wider world.
You have a story, and it makes sense that you feel, believe, act and react as you do. Change and growth rarely occur in anything that resembles a straight line and being mean to yourself really does not help. If you want to believe these statements but are finding it difficult, I would love an opportunity to meet with you. I am a fully licensed psychologist and enjoy working with adolescents and adults with a wide range of concerns. I believe that therapy occurs within a partnership where together we will make educated decisions about how to approach your goals based on your specific life circumstances, needs, values, and strengths.

Whether the transition is the death or loss of a loved one, workplace or financial stress, the birth of a child, or a challenging relationship/
family
dynamic, we can work together to address those overwhelming feelings.
Even though transitions are a part of all of our lives, they sometimes stir up old pain or are just too overwhelming to navigate without some help. You deserve the time and support to work through it and counseling can provide that for you. I believe in a person centered, interpersonal, cognitive behavioral and strength based counseling approach. I have over 16 years of experience using these approaches working with individuals of all ages dealing with anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship issues, chronic illnesses and transitions at all stages of life.

Areas I treat include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, couple conflict,
family
conflict, stress, life transitions and grief.
When people seek my counseling services, I do not see them as "problems to be fixed," but as people who have become stuck in patterns of behavior and ways of dealing with their feelings that are not helpful. My first goal with my clients is to establish a safe place where they feel understood and free to really "open up." I respect clients' individuality and consequently work together with them for what will best help them achieve a satisfying, productive life. My ultimate goal for my clients is for them to gain self understanding through awareness of what has influenced them so they can choose healthy ways of conducting their lives

We find ourselves traveling down the same roads all the time, same route to work, school, and even
family
and friends' houses. Sometimes we become so used to the way we are living that change is often difficult to achieve. I believe this is because we are stuck in ways of thinking because we have done it for as long as we can remember. "That's just the way I am." If you are looking to find a new way of doing things because you are unsatisfied or stuck in a rut, I would love to help you navigate change.

Life at times can seem like a battle field, and our minds our most hostile enemy. Many of us are in conflict with both internal and external factors that exist in our lives. Sometimes we don't feel equipped to withstand these forces or conditions that exist in our daily life. Depression, trauma, abuse, addictions, failed relationships, and shaming thought patterns that can hold us back in
family
relationships, academic achievement, social interactions, and career development. I believe the battles we win within our minds, can extend throughout all areas of our life. It's not only becoming mindful, but taking steps towards change.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
