When people seek my counseling services, I do not see them as "problems to be fixed," but as people who have become stuck in patterns of behavior and ways of dealing with their feelings that are not helpful. My first goal with my clients is to establish a safe place where they feel understood and free to really "open up." I respect clients' individuality and consequently work together with them for what will best help them achieve a satisfying, productive life. My ultimate goal for my clients is for them to gain self understanding through awareness of what has influenced them so they can choose healthy ways of conducting their lives

Helping to empower individuals I use specialized treatment methods, which include verbal processing, play therapy, sand tray therapy, and writing and drawing methods. I acknowledge that making the decision to pursue therapy can be a really big step. Dedicating time and effort toward improving mental wellbeing and focusing on oneself is not an easy task. It is for this reason that I strive to provide a safe, compassionate, and nurturing environment in which clients can feel comfortable leaning into their vulnerabilities. I am dedicated to ensuring that anybody who visits my office feels seen, heard, and validated.

Research shows that joy is the hardest human emotion to truly experience. Challenges with depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, interpersonal crisis, relationships or many other things, hold us back from fully experiencing these moments of joy in life. Whenever you may be at in your journey, your choice in seeking help is one of bravery. My goal is to partner with you to better understand your present circumstances, create meaningful goals and continue to provide support and hope to you along the way.

I have a particular background in helping clients during life changes and transitions, which can be both an exciting and a stressful time for people. I strive to provide a respectful, compassionate, and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment, and I aim to be supportive, yet honest and transparent, with all of my clients.

Everyday our mind processes information at an extremely fast rate, with social media, mainstream media and our social circle, we are constantly being reminded of who we are not, who we should be or who we want to be. This kind of pressure, added with any previous trauma or unhealthy thoughts can cause anxiety, depression, anger or other various mental health challenges. Sometimes it feels easier to address these thoughts alone, the reality is, it is always healthier to process these thoughts with an unbiased individual so that the pressure of today’s world doesn’t feel so tight.

Most of us act with the best of intentions and don’t always get the results we were expecting. As a counselor, my role is not to tell a client what to do, but rather to help clients examine what their goals are, different ways goals can be achieved, and to provide supportive and honest feedback through a therapeutic relationship. I have lived in and around very diverse communities throughout my life, and I take pride in understanding and honoring everyone’s unique culture and beliefs.

How can I find a therapist in Grand Rapids?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
