Life is difficult. With the right tools and some effort, it does not have to be. My hope is to help you with your goals. Whether that is to feel better (less depressed, anxious or angry), improve your relationships (with a
spouse
, parent, child, etc.), change your behaviors (substance use, self harm, avoidance), or something else that is important to you, I'd love the opportunity to help. I enjoy working with a number of different presenting problems. My passions are working with teens/adults, men's issues (especially navigating work and/or family life), post-partum Dad's, athletes and substance use disorders.

Life has a way of happening to us sometimes, and we realize we might need support, but fear stops us from taking the next step forward. I like to take time to get to know each person and build a
relationship
with them that conveys trust, respect, and understanding. My goal as a therapist has been to be a support for individuals and walk with people in their journey to become the best versions of themselves. If I am your therapist, you can expect to be met with empathy, support, respect, and understanding. When anyone comes through my door, they can expect not to be judged or shamed for any of their history or previous experiences.

Communicating openly with your
partner
has felt more and more difficult lately. You're not sure how to speak what's on your mind without worrying that you might make things worse or end up hurting their feelings. Maybe you second guess every word that comes out and find yourself bracing for impact. It's hard to say what you mean when you were never taught how to advocate for your own voice. You're left feeling frustrated and alone, and because it's easier you just avoid the hard conversations. All this means there's more distance between the two of you because you suppress and deny your needs and the problem never gets solved.

I believe the therapeutic
relationship
provides a unique opportunity for clients to be able to process their experiences verbally with an unbiased individual who is able to help them explore, understand, and participate in the world around them.
Oftentimes, we experience barriers in achieving our desired future, and may or may not be able to identify or overcome them on our own. We will work together to unravel your questions, concerns, or frustrations so you are able to become a better version of yourself by obtaining clarity, closure, and/or modifying behavior. Life's challenges are real, and you don't have to face them on your own. I hope to help you understand yourself and your relationships more fully, so you are able to feel more free, authentic, and fulfilled.

Open appointments in March.. Vulnerability: while rewarding, can be daunting. It isn’t easy to let someone into your internal landscape and I value the possibility of learning yours. My name is Sam and I work with clients to become intimately comfortable with the buried and beautifully impactful aspects of themselves. Often, the
relationship
to yourself contributes to how your days unfold in the world around you. When was the last time you heard or nurtured the parts of yourself that long for you? And, for those who have ever been labeled as too sensitive or too much, we can utilize and harness the power that your emotion may hold.

We will walk together on this journey and work to process thoughts, emotions and learn new ways of responding to life’s challenges. When we embrace our ability to feel and experience hard things, we learn self-love, empathy, and peace. I enjoy working with clients and developing a
relationship
by actively listening, advocating, and assisting in change through evidence based practices while providing a safe space for healing and growth.

Couples
with young kiddo are particularly at risk for marriage and family strife because they are so busy, and because there is so much that is new to their brains, emotions and
relationship
. Figuring out how to be both mom and dad as well as husband and wife is often overwhelming and troubling. Tension builds when the
relationship
energy gets split between kiddos needs (and there are a lot of them!) and marriage needs (and those are valid as well). The energy to figure out how to integrate all those needs, wants, wishes becomes divided and divisive. Disconnected and discontent brew and
relationship
trouble stews. What to do?

I work with adults (ages 18 and older), who struggle with PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, family and relational issues, ADHD and
couples counseling
.
I believe in a Strength-Based approach to therapy. My belief is to start with what is working (even if it is just a little bit) and build from there. I encourage the client to have an active voice in the treatment process and to be involved in their clinical goal setting. I find that CBT and somatic techniques are helpful with many clients and utilize a variety of skills and activities to help clients learn and use these techniques in their daily life.

I am not accepting new clients at this time. Sometimes we need to be reminded that struggling does not mean that we are weak, broken, or unworthy. It helps to connect with someone who knows that your story is worth listening to. I want your story to be heard and valued without judgment. By providing a safe environment, I help people develop compassion for how their past and current experiences have impacted them and explore new ways of being, thinking, and feeling. I believe that it is the strength of the therapeutic
relationship
and the goals you create together which builds meaningful change.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
