It is my goal that anyone who walks through my door feels safe to reveal the truth of their unique story. Feelings of shame, guilt, failed expectations, and disappointment in others all contribute to how we view ourselves. I understand that it can be difficult to begin the process of therapy. I am honored to support individuals and
couples
who want to begin to do that work in a non-judgmental space. I work with individuals and
couples
who have experiences of dishonesty, addictions, infidelity, high conflict, self-harm, family conflict, engagement with the court system, damaged relationships and more.

I believe having the ability to quickly build rapport and a strong therapeutic
relationship
with my clients is one of the most important aspects of helping enable and support change. Throughout the course of my career as a school social worker and therapist, I have worked closely with preteen, teen, and young adults going through a wide range of behavioral and mental health concerns. Within my practice, I provide an empathetic and non-judgmental environment that meets preteens, teens and young adults where they are so they can express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions in a safe and welcoming environment.

Couples
with young kiddo are particularly at risk for marriage and family strife because they are so busy, and because there is so much that is new to their brains, emotions and
relationship
. Figuring out how to be both mom and dad as well as husband and wife is often overwhelming and troubling. Tension builds when the
relationship
energy gets split between kiddos needs (and there are a lot of them!) and marriage needs (and those are valid as well). The energy to figure out how to integrate all those needs, wants, wishes becomes divided and divisive. Disconnected and discontent brew and
relationship
trouble stews. What to do?

I have worked in a variety of areas in the mental health field, including college counseling, in-home counseling, and outpatient counseling providing individual, family, and
couples counseling
.
One of my favorite quotes is, “No one knows you better than yourself”. Even so, at times we struggle to heal and make changes on our own. Sometimes we need help evaluating our relationships and experiences from a new perspective. Together we will build an authentic connection, get to the core of recurring problems, and heal from life events.

I have a special passion for working with
couples
, folks with ADHD, and those in the LGBTQIA community.
Just as we sometimes need help caring for physical aches and pains, sometimes we need help improving our mental health. I am passionate about helping others look inward to learn more about themselves and connect with their inner voice through the power of therapy. At its heart, therapy is as powerful as what you put into it. Being vulnerable can often feel daunting, but by working together, my goal is to help you build the confidence you need to bravely take the reins when you feel like the life you want is just out of reach.

As a therapist, I believe that building a
relationship
is the most important part of the therapeutic process. From that
relationship
, it becomes possible to examine difficult areas of your life in order to experience growth and security within yourself. The therapeutic setting provides a unique opportunity to pause the busyness of everyday life and sort through present or past concerns that may be affecting you and your family.

Sometimes life can be overwhelming, and it can be difficult to manage the stress and trials that come. Our experiences can leave us feeling overwhelmed, alone, or unsure where to turn. When we feel stuck or scared, we can act in ways we question, lose track of what we value, or begin to feel unworthy of those around us. This can impact the way we interact with others and show up in our day to day lives. Through the counseling
relationship
you can learn to explore more about yourself, process your experiences and emotions, begin to heal, and take charge of the life you want to live.

I work with individuals,
couples
and families.
Most often the goal coming into therapy is to find relief and decrease symptoms. Some may come to gain skills to get through challenging life situations and transitions. The skills learned in therapy can be applied for you to use throughout your life and will support long term positive change. The change occurs as we become aware of our life story and the patterns that unfold. In this process we gain more awareness and understanding of the self in relation to others. It is my passion to walk alongside you on the path of self-discovery as your story unfolds and you gain personal meaning.

I believe in the innate capabilities, strength, and wellness of my clients and that the counseling
relationship
provides the basis from which change can occur. My approach is to walk beside you and validate your personal experiences and invite you to make changes based on your priorities and values. We will work together to decide on your goals and the means for accomplishing them. It can be scary to take the first steps and believe you can achieve your goals. By working together, we can find the path that works for you to heal and grow in all areas of your life.

Open appointments in June.. Vulnerability: while rewarding, can be daunting. It isn’t easy to let someone into your internal landscape and I value the possibility of learning yours. My name is Sam and I work with clients to become intimately comfortable with the buried and beautifully impactful aspects of themselves. Often, the
relationship
to yourself contributes to how your days unfold in the world around you. When was the last time you heard or nurtured the parts of yourself that long for you? In doing so, a gateway opens up to a sense of self-worth that will allow you to experience yourself and your environment with a new lens.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
