Life can be messy, complicated, and challenging. It can also be joyful. Sometimes those difficult times overshadow the joy. My goal is to create a welcoming, safe space to promote healing and generate peace. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and a Masters in Social Work from Michigan State University. Since then I have worked in various settings such as the medical field, client homes, and the school system.

It takes courage to go to a counselor for help. Whether you are struggling with an on-going issue, or just going through a rough time in life, whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, adjustment to a new situation, grief/loss, mood issues, or something else, working with a counselor will help. The good news is that because you are willing to reach out for a helping hand, you already have a good start on what it takes to achieve the change you are looking to make! You have awareness and willingness; 2 ingredients for success!

The vulnerability required of therapy can be overwhelming. As someone who has personally experienced not only the benefits of therapy, but the support & compassion of a therapist, I can safely say working with someone who sees you as an individual can truly do wonders. When clients seek my therapeutic services, I don’t view them as having “problems.” I recognize them as individuals, stuck in patterns of behaviors no longer helpful. As an upbeat & energetic person, I provide a safe, open, & validating environment to facilitate change.

I am a clinical behavioral therapist with a private practice focusing mainly on children and families. I enjoy working with children and use various play techniques to explore the lagging skills which may have developed strong responses and behaviors to stressors in your child. There are many instances in which I will accept the parent as client to address behaviors in the home. I work with siblings when appropriate and have worked with clients ages 4-adulthood.

Navigating through life can be a rollercoaster ride, with no blueprint telling us what to do. Like a rollercoaster ride, life comes with many ups and downs, and curves in between. At times we may feel stuck or have exhausted all of our options, these thoughts are normal. My goal in counseling is to help you get unstuck and get you back on the ride we call life.

Life is full of experiences that challenge us and shape us, often including periods of grief and loss and learning to adjust to our environment. I am confident in my over 10 years of social work experience, that together we can navigate through the challenges you are facing. Whether you are navigating a life transition, facing grief and loss, working through a complicated situation or relationship or just realizing that you need more tools for your own self-care, reaching out is the first step. Additionally, I have experience supporting people with cancer and their families, recognizing this is a unique experience.

Welcome! As humans, we are all on a path of healing and growing. We are born with intrinsic worth, but through painful experiences, we internalize untruths. Our work is about creating a new truth by trimming the pain that keeps you stuck in shame, toxic relational patterns, negative thoughts, unhealthy habits and loss of purpose. Collaboration is the foundation of my work. Humans are the experts in their lives, but I do have experience and training in how to help people make the changes they desire, as well as providing compassionate, empathetic, and non-judgmental care.

Not interested in taking medications? At The Well Being, I provide my clients with 10+ years of experience as a therapist, and an opportunity for them to begin using cardiovascular exercise as an effective mental health "medication" . At The Well Being, I offer traditional outpatient counseling services, largely based in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (I was trained at the Beck Institute), while also providing the means for exercise to become a key component of your treatment. This is an alternative evidence-based approach for those who aren't interested in taking medications, or a more comprehensive alternative for those who are.

Your anxieties and worries are controlling too much of your life. That anxious inner voice won’t quiet down, and it’s just so convincing - you're frustrated that you listen to it, but you're scared not to. What if you ignore it and your worst fears come true? You know it’s irrational, but your anxiety just won’t let your brain believe the truth. You overthink so many things, and your inner dialog is exhausting you.

My clients come to me when they are tired of living in emotional pain.  This pain may have lead them to not like themselves, feel alone, and worried and depressed.  They may feel like they have no control or have lost the control that they used to have.  They feel stuck or like they don't belong.  My clients leave with a sense of freedom and empowerment. They understand their value/worth and like themselves. They feel like they are ready to choose what comes next in life. They have hope. Clients have told me "I feel safe now", "I never knew I could feel this good", "I actually like myself now. I didn't know I could".

Life is difficult, and sometimes challenges can overwhelm us. In 20 years of counseling, I have gained a wealth of experience in helping young people achieve meaningful growth and a greater sense of well-being. I thrive on helping others through periods of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse, divorce, disability, trauma, abuse, and issues related to gender identity and sexuality. And as someone who identifies as a transgender female, I am naturally a strong advocate and ally for all those within the LGBTQIA+ community.

How can I find a therapist in Grand Rapids?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
