I have a specialty in treating adolescents, and in consulting with parents around child and
adolescent
concerns.
Psychotherapy can help you with worries, anxiety, depression, and troubled relationships. I can assist you in becoming more constructive in your approach to life; you will discover in treatment abilities that you posess but that you might not even have known about which, when they are known to you, help you to be in a stronger position to feel more confidence and comfort dealing with the challenging aspects of your life. My therapeutic method consists of a process of problem solving with a focus on exploring ones thinking, imagining, feeling and experiencing.

Thirteen years experience as Senior Staff Psychologist on an inpatient
adolescent
unit allowed me to work with a wide spectrum of
adolescent
problems including ADHD, behavioral, and eating disorders.
Finding the right therapist to guide you through a particular setback, conflict or crisis along life's journey can be a daunting process....I know. Being a psychologist for 30 years and having been involved in hundreds of hours of my own personal therapy during my doctoral training, I understand the importance of the right client/therapist match. Successful outcomes are more promising when one feels comfortable, safe and confident with a competent experienced professional. Selecting a therapist should not be an impulsive decision so take your time and be particular since you are about to invest time, finances and trust.

Life can be hard, especially in our pre-
teen
through young adult years. There are many significant life challenges and changes that occur in this time. Peer pressure, self-esteem, anxiety, lack of motivation, and managing friendships and relationships can all make this time period that much more difficult. Thankfully, you do not have to do it alone. Through individual therapy sessions, I strive to create a safe space to unpack life's difficulties and empower you to find ways to move through them using a strength-based cognitive behavioral approach.

I work with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, perinatal mood/anxiety issues, parent/child attachment issues, substance abuse,
adolescent
and midlife transitions, I provide a safe space to do the work together.
Most often the goal coming into therapy is to find relief and decrease symptoms. Some may come to gain skills to get through challenging life situations and transitions. The skills learned in therapy can be applied for you to use throughout your life and will support long term positive change. The change occurs as we become aware of our life story and the patterns that unfold. In this process we gain more awareness and understanding of the self in relation to others. It is my passion to walk alongside you on the path of self-discovery as your story unfolds and you gain personal meaning.

Hello! I’m a licensed clinical social worker with 30+ years of experience. I have worked in school social work, foster care, adoption,
adolescent
residential treatment, crisis assessment at Pine Rest Hospital, and outpatient treatment. I have been in private practice for 14 years. It is my privilege to listen to, and be with, people in their stories. Making sense of our narrative is a fundamental component to a healthy mind and spirit. And making peace with our perfectly imperfect, and unique version of humanity is essential for our emotional life and our thought space. It would be my privilege to hear your story. Peace, Amy

Due to my community presentations in
adolescent
growth and development, I see adolescents between the ages of 12 and 25 (the brain is not fully developed until around the age of 25 years!).
Have a cup of tea or coffee. Sit back, and maybe even wrap in a blanket. Take this time to go wherever you need to go emotionally, knowing this is a judgment free room. As your therapist, I will not be able to solve your problems for you. Actually, I would not want to even if I could. I do not presume that I have answers to your problems, or that my way is the best or only way. I fully believe that you have the answers you need within you, we just need to uncover them. I will walk with you for as long as you want and need.

My clients say things like...I am overwhelmed with stress. My anxiety is out of control. Does depression ever get better? I want to die. How did my relationship end up here? When does the pain of loss stop? Why can't my kids, spouse, ex just cooperate? My
teenager
is out of control. My parents just don't get it! The flashbacks are real. Will it ever get any better? Real people. Real-life. Real issues. Talking to someone helps. That is why I am here.

My experiences in a variety of settings including college counseling centers, Veteran's Affairs, inpatient addiction rehabilitation center, consultation center, domestic violence advocacy organization, and
adolescent
homeless shelter are a particular strength of my clinical work and allow me to uniquely provide real-world application for my clients concerns.
I offer psychological testing and therapy. I believe in a collaborative approach to therapy and value my client's life experiences and the knowledge that they bring into the therapeutic relationship. I tend to work interpersonally and view the therapeutic relationship as a tool for gaining insight into personal struggles, as well as a venue to practice new behaviors and boundaries. I enjoy working with clients from diverse backgrounds and life experiences and while I am trained as a generalist, I have particular interests in working with depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, body image, gender identity and socialization.

Sad, Worried, and Stubborn Teenagers; Rocky Relationships; Worried Parents; and Stressed Individuals. These are the people I help. You probably already know what the problem is and what you don’t want anymore. You don’t want to be sad, you don’t want to be in this rut, or you're tired of arguing with your
teenager
or spouse about the same things over and over. Trying to solve it yourself can be like trying to eat a huge pizza that hasn’t been cut into slices-- it's overwhelming and you don’t know where to start. My job is to help you break the solution into pieces so you can decide where to start and what your next steps are.

I believe having the ability to quickly build rapport and a strong therapeutic relationship with my clients is one of the most important aspects of helping enable and support change. Throughout the course of my career as a school social worker and therapist, I have worked closely with preteen,
teen
, and young adults going through a wide range of behavioral and mental health concerns. Within my practice, I provide an empathetic and non-judgmental environment that meets preteens, teens and young adults where they are so they can express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions in a safe and welcoming environment.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
