These are independent assessments and are not intended as on-going therapy, however, this option is available for those working through substance use/abuse/addiction.
I work to help people navigate their complex worlds in order to live a healthier, happier life. I believe that all components of one's life are interrelated. Stress, crisis, life changes and uncertainty happen to everyone, often without warning. When crisis or chaos strike, it is comforting to have someone listen in a safe, open, non-judgmental space in which you can uncover the inner strengths and skills you already possess. I work with clients to create this environment, through which genuine healing, change, and self-empowerment can occur.

Before this I worked with geriatrics, homelessness, and substance use disorders.
Having a safe place where you are as comfortable as possible is key to sharing hardships. I commonly use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I utilized parts language and the internal family systems modality to help you explore different inner conflicts. My favorite modality is compassion focused therapy because I believe everyone is deserving of love, care, and dignity. Overall, the modality and intervention changes on your needs and is person centered to the struggle at hand.

My past experiences have been in community settings working with women diverted from the criminal justice system for substance use disorder treatment and working with people with severe and persistent mental illness.
I believe that therapy is a safe and non-judgmental place for clients to explore what is most important to them. It is important to me to relate to clients as whole people, who are much more than the concerns they bring to session, but people with unique identities, experiences, relationships, communities, and strengths. Keeping all of these in mind helps me offer personalized guidance, support, and perspective that ultimately serves client's own goals. It is truly an honor to witness these various facets of individuals, and I am dedicated to bringing the warmth, respect, and support that clients deserve in turn.

When individuals are struggling with their mental health, substance use, or other life stresses they might not always know where to go for help. My job as a therapist is to provide you with a safe space where you can separate these ongoing challenges, feel less overwhelmed, and take control of your life. We will focus on setting realistic therapeutic goals, empowerment, and not letting these challenges define who you are as a person. By working together, we can achieve stabilization to envision how you want your life to be.

Our goal in life is to be loved. We are remembered for how we make people feel. My goal as a therapist is to help families, couples and individuals with communication, coping and relationship skills to create a life that is this as loving and connected as possible. I have specialized in substance abuse for years. This has given me insight into abandonment issues, the need to escape to create emotional distance in relationships and how these types of patterns play out in relationships. My strengths are helping people to reconnect to their purpose in life and finding meaning in the relationships in their lives and rebuilding trust.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
