Hello and welcome, I’m Hilary, a certified yoga therapist through the International Associations of Yoga Therapists with YogaLife Institute. In addition, a 500 hr certified yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance, earning my first 200 hr yoga teacher training through The Mindful School of Yoga in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2018. It has been one of my brightest guiding lights, continuously leading back to myself from then until today.

You're the one people count on. You keep functioning, showing up, handling everything.. while feeling anxious, resentful, numb, or quietly unsure how much longer you can carry it. My clients often come to me after betrayal trauma, a loss, or a reckoning with a painful family history. Or because years of high-functioning anxiety finally stopped working. As an EMDR specialist, I help you actually process what happened instead of circling it: the discovery you can't stop replaying, the grief that won't move, the childhood that asked too much of you. This is focused, structured work - not another year of talking around it.

My approach to therapy appeals to psychologically-minded individuals and couples who seek a deeper understanding of themselves and others in their pursuit of physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual wholeness. While I tailor treatment to each individual or couple, I typically rely on relational psychodynamic psychotherapy—an evidence-based therapeutic approach rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition. The term psychodynamic reflects an appreciation for the complexity of the human mind and the fact that there are “dynamics” outside our immediate awareness that impact our emotions and actions.

The choice to seek therapy is often complicated and forming a relationship with your therapist is an important part of the process. I create a collaborative space where you can discuss your concerns, identities and story. Together we can identify where you would like therapy to take you, build on day-to-day techniques and explore deeper patterns and experiences that may create barriers. My approach is integrative and incorporates skills, narrative processing, metaphor, and intentional decision making. I hope that through our work you will feel empowered to make changes and feel more secure, stable, and in sync with your values.

Most of us act with the best of intentions and don’t always get the results we were expecting. As a counselor, my role is not to tell a client what to do, but rather to help clients examine what their goals are, different ways goals can be achieved, and to provide supportive and honest feedback through a therapeutic relationship. I have lived in and around very diverse communities throughout my life, and I take pride in understanding and honoring everyone’s unique culture and beliefs.

Life presents us with challenges and opportunities that sometimes require consultation. Often, change and healing are facilitated by assistance from caring others. I have repeatedly witnessed the resiliency of the human spirit. I am eager to meet with clients motivated for change and curious about the possibility of having more satisfying lives. I believe that psychotherapy requires trust and a working relationship. I am a compassionate listener and tailor my approach to best match the uniqueness of each client. I approach problems from a strengths-based, holistic perspective that considers a client's relevant biological, developmental, social, and cultural factors.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
