I also specialize in working with individuals who are experiencing other obsessive-type disorders such as trichotillomania, excoriation, and hoarding.
Just “one last time,” you say to yourself. You've been telling yourself this same lie for years, hoping and praying that this time it will be true. Resisting the urge to check feels so impossible, but it seems like your only option is to give in. The OCD tells you that if you do the ritual just one more time, the anxiety will go away. Although you know logically that your fears are irrational, you cannot stop them, and the feeling of panic and dread take over your mind. You crave just a moment of freedom from the grips of the obsession.

It takes courage to make the decision to search for a therapist. As an empath being a therapist has always been my calling. Having a connection with your therapist is crutial to the therapeutic process. Hearing your story is important to me. Is past trauma still haunting you now? Therapy can help you process traumatic events and heal. Is anxiety crippling you from living? I can help you figure out you're triggers and how to cope. Is depression making it difficult for you to get out of bed? I can help you uncover the root cause of your depression and help you find your purpose in life.

I always knew that in some capacity, I wanted to work in a profession that would allow me to help people. As a young adult, I realized that counseling would be an amazing way for me to work with people as they face difficulties in life. I attended Grand Valley State University where I received my Bachelor's degree in psychology and later the University of Phoenix where I received my Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling.

You have been sitting with your thoughts and seem to recycle your memories. You are excellent at suppressing your hurt and stay busy with work and life as a distraction. You no longer connect with others the way you used to and keep friends and family at a distance. The Pandemic may have increased your anxiety and depression and you are uncertain where to begin. Your worry and fear come out as; anger, sadness and controlling behaviors, due to questioning your worth and self esteem. Will I ever feel truly happy? Will I feel truly loved? Will I find my life path and the career that makes my soul soar? Will I learn to forgive?

You're exhausted from always trying to hold it together. No matter how hard you try, you constantly feel stuck. Your body holds onto trauma and stress, keeping you constantly on edge, as if danger is always lurking. You wonder if something is wrong with you or if you're somehow broken. It feels like you've lost your direction, but deep down, you know there’s more to you than what you've experienced. You're choosing healing and growth, refusing to give up on yourself. This is your moment for change, though you're uncertain where to begin. You feel ready to release the trauma that has been holding you back.

No matter how hard you try to move forward, you feel like your taking one step back. You’re a high performer with perfectionism tendencies and always put on a smile, which helps you forget your pain. You feel you will never be fully happy and never be able to fully enjoy life how others do, because of your many losses, attributing to your decreased self esteem. You may keep friends and family at a distance, to protect yourself from yet another inevitable loss. You may have stopped exercising and taking care of yourself the way you used to, since it takes too much work and you're just surviving at the end of another long day.

Welcome to a safe space for black women, indigenous women, women of color and our allies. It is important to recognize that cultural factors can impact how conditions are experienced and treated. For example, research has shown that individuals from BIPOC racial and ethnic backgrounds may be less likely to seek mental health treatment due to cultural stigma, lack of access to care, or mistrust of healthcare providers. As a black doctor with cultural understanding, I am uniquely positioned to address these barriers and provide culturally sensitive care for women with ADHD, Anxiety, Obesity and Professional Burnout.

Hoarding Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?

Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?

The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?

Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
