With a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and dual specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I have extensive experience in delivering top-notch healthcare services.
When envisioning my ideal client as a mental health nurse practitioner, I imagine someone who is struggling with managing their emotions and navigating daily life due to conditions such as anxiety, depression, or trauma. Their needs include a safe space to express their feelings, coping strategies to manage their symptoms, and a supportive environment to promote healing. But what truly inspires me is their goals of finding inner peace, building resilience, and developing healthy relationships. These aspirations motivate me to help them regain control of their mental well-being and improve their overall quality of life.

I use trauma-informed, Family Systems, and CBT approaches.
“Love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within,” James Baldwin once said. Do you want more connection in your life, to have a community of loved ones, however large or small? You are not alone. Each of us desires connection, and yet trauma and broken relationships between loved ones often get in the way - this brokenness can affect our closest relationships, and families suffer. Or, sometimes you may feel like you don’t really know or love yourself as well as you think you should. These questions, desires, and fears are part of the human experience, and part of my own life experience.

I have experience working with Black women navigating the intersection of race and gender, anxiety, depression, and family issues, including parenting in divorced, blended, or separated families.
My virtual group, Nourishing The Strong Black Woman, is starting on February 18th, and registration is open! As a Black woman, you have gotten used to carrying the load intended for others, placing yourself last on your to-do list, and being strong for everyone else. You’re so afraid of disappointing others that you continue to suffer quietly despite the feelings of emptiness you experience. You keep your feelings to yourself and go about suppressing them, hoping the feelings will go away, but they won’t unless you decide to change.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
