As a private practitioner, my clients range in age from 17-65 and bring to counseling a diverse set of issues ranging from human sexuality, abuse, drug use, mood disorders (e.g. Anxiety & Depression), serious mental illness and family, parenting and marriage issues. My process involves getting to know my clients and building trust as we work together to determine how the counseling process can best serve them. Once trust is cultivated and the issues are unveiled, we're able to move forward with a Person Centered focus that intersects psychology and a biblical worldview.

No matter how hard you try to move forward, you feel like your taking one step back. You’re a high performer with perfectionism tendencies and always put on a smile, which helps you forget your pain . You feel you will never be fully happy and never be able to fully enjoy life how others do, because of your many losses, attributing to your decreased self esteem. You may keep friends and family at a distance, to protect yourself from yet another inevitable loss. You may have stopped exercising and taking care of yourself the way you used to, since it takes too much work and you're just surviving at the end of another long day.

Maybe you've been diagnosed with a long term illness or have had symptoms for years and at times you don’t recognize yourself anymore. You know these health struggles are somehow behind your depressed and anxious feelings, and you feel alone…like no one understands. Right now, you may have more questions than answers, but one thing you know for sure is that you’d do anything to get your life back. You grieve for the person you used to be and find it hard to imagine yourself living a worthwhile life with this illness trying to drag you down every chance it gets. (Due to demand, I ONLY accept clients with chronic illness concerns)

I approach therapy with the ideology that life is a culmination of interconnected parts. Feelings stem from experiences, experiences influence perceptions, and subsequently guide many of the decisions one makes in life. When individuals experience stagnation or challenges, it may be connected to an array of life experiences. This may lead to a challenge with seeing beyond that which is. The subsequent result may serve as a breeding ground for emotional and physical pain , challenges in interpersonal relationships and unresolved grief.

Allow me to help you access your strength that has been buried under pain and trauma.
You hold yourself to a higher standard yet, lately seem to have lost focus and struggle to maintain your motivation. You find yourself starting to believe the small voice in the back of your head stating that you are not good enough. You go to lengths to take great care of others however, do not extend the same love and care to yourself. You put on a happy face and pretend that all is well however, often can feel very much alone and anxious. You may feel consumed by: sadness, fear, anger or hopelessness and even the simplest of tasks seems overwhelming. You long to get back to your old self and find joy and meaning in life.

People become discouraged and function ineffectively due to mistaken beliefs and faulty values. Counseling helps people who have problems or concerns they are not resolving to their satisfaction on their own. When Russell Crowe was asked, in reference to his mental health, “Do you still see little people? Do you still hear voices? He responded, “I believe all of us do. I just choose not to acknowledge it.” He realized something was going on with him mentally, and he was honest about it. As your counselor, I can assist you in looking for major mistakes in thinking and valuing, like mistrust and lack of confidence.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
